Rear Suspension Beam

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove rear tires from vehicle using power tool.
  2.  
  3. On non-SE-R vehicles, remove rear drum and brake assembly. Refer to Rear Drum Brakes in the Brakes Section.
  4.  
  5. On SE-R vehicles, remove the rear disc and brake caliper assembly. Then hang brake caliper using wire. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes in the Brakes Section.
  6.  
  7. Separate parking brake rear cable from rear brake and rear suspension beam. Refer to Parking Brake in the Brakes Section.
  8.  
  9. Remove wheel sensor and wheel sensor harness from wheel hub and bearing assembly and rear suspension beam, if equipped. Refer to Wheel Sensor in the Brakes Section.
  10.  
  11. On non-SE-R vehicles, remove rear brake tube from the wheel cylinder. Refer to Brake Operating System in the Brakes Section.
  12.  
  13. Remove wheel hub and bearing assembly and back plate. Refer to Wheel Bearings in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.
  14.  
  15. Set jack under rear suspension beam.
  16.  
  17. Remove both shock absorber lower bolts. Refer to Shock Absorbers in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.

  19. Remove coil springs (left/right). Refer to Coil Springs in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.

  21. Remove brake line retaining clip and disconnect the brake line from the rear suspension beam bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove center exhaust pipe assembly and insulator. Refer to Exhaust System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  24.  
  25. Remove rear suspension beam bolt and nut.
  26.  
  27. Gradually lower the jack to remove rear suspension beam from vehicle.

Inspection After Removal

  1. Check components for deformation, cracks, and other damage, and replace if necessary.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Gradually lower the jack to install rear suspension beam to vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install rear suspension beam bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Install center exhaust pipe assembly and insulator. Refer to Exhaust System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  6.  
  7. Install brake line retaining clip and connect the brake line to the rear suspension beam bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install coil springs (left/right). Refer to Coil Springs in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.
  10.  
  11. Install both shock absorber lower bolts. Refer to Shock Absorbers in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.
  12.  
  13. Set jack under rear suspension beam.
  14.  
  15. Install wheel hub and bearing assembly and back plate. Refer to Wheel Bearings in Rear Suspension in the Suspension Section.
  16.  
  17. On non-SE-R vehicles, install rear brake tube to the wheel cylinder. Refer to Brake Operating System in the Brakes Section.
  18.  
  19. Install wheel sensor and wheel sensor harness to wheel hub and bearing assembly and rear suspension beam, if equipped. Refer to Wheel Sensor in the Brakes Section.
  20.  
  21. Install parking brake rear cable to rear brake and rear suspension beam. Refer to Parking Brake in the Brakes Section.
  22.  
  23. On SE-R vehicles, install the rear disc and brake caliper assembly. Then release brake caliper from wire. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes in the Brakes Section.
  24.  
  25. On non-SE-R vehicles, install rear drum and brake assembly. Refer to Rear Drum Brakes in the Brakes Section.
  26.  
  27. Install rear tires to vehicle using power tool.
  28.  
  29. For tightening torque, refer to the accompanying illustration.

  31. Perform final tightening of rear suspension beam (A) under unladen conditions with tires on level ground.

  33. Refill with new brake fluid and bleed air. Refer to Brake System Bleeding in the Brakes Section.

  35. Check the following after finishing work:
    1. Parking brake operation (stroke): Refer to Parking Brake in the Brakes Section.
    2.  
    3. Wheel sensor harness for proper connection: Refer to Wheel Sensor in the Brakes Section.
