Intermediate Shaft



Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


NOTE
Any time the ignition switch has been removed or installed, the keys must be re-registered in the BCM. Refer to CONSULT operation manual IVIS/NVIS.


NOTE
Steering column must be kept at maximum tilt up position during removal and installation. Do not operate tilt mechanism while steering column is out of the vehicle.


NOTE
Put matching mark on intermediate shaft and steering column assembly before removing intermediate shaft.


NOTE
When steering wheel is turned repeatedly with the vehicle stopped, care must be taken because EPS motor and EPS control unit may get too hot.


NOTE
Steering column assembly is heavy. Care must be taken when removing steering column assembly from vehicle.


NOTE
Do not put steering column assembly near the things that generate excessive magnetic force.


NOTE
Steering column assembly cannot be disassembled.

  1. Set vehicle to the straight ahead-position.
  2.  
  3. Remove instrument lower finisher screw, position instrument lower finisher to disconnect diagnostic connector and hood release cable, and remove lower finisher.

  5. Disconnect switch connectors installed to steering column assembly as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove bolt of intermediate shaft (upper side).
  8.  
  9. Remove intermediate shaft (lower side) from steering gear assembly with the following procedure.
    NOTE
    Never deform or bend the holder.


    NOTE
    Never replace the intermediate shaft if the holder is deformed or bent.

    1. Insert a suitable tool between the cover and the holder. Then push the cover down in the direction shown and remove the cover.

    3. Remove bolt.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the cam nut in direction shown. Align the cam nut V-shaped groove with the holder V-guide. Fit the cam nut to the holder V-guide, then remove the cam nut from the holder.
      NOTE
      Rotate the cam nut if the nut becomes misaligned as shown. Align the cam nut V-shaped groove with the holder V-guide.


      NOTE
      There are two different grooves, but only one that fits the holder V-guide.

      Fig. Rotate the cam nut in direction shown. Align the cam nut V-shaped groove (1) with the holder (2) V-guide. Fit the cam nut to the holder V-guide, then remove the cam nut from the holder.

    7. Remove the intermediate shaft by removing the holder pawl from the pinion shaft groove and slide out the intermediate shaft using a suitable tool.

To install:


NOTE
Align the cam nut V-shaped groove with the holder V-guide.

  1. Install the cam nut to the holder guide.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    NOTE
    Make sure cam nut is installed correctly to keep it from loosening.


    NOTE
    Replace intermediate shaft assembly if cam nut does not fit to the holder.


    NOTE
    Do not install the cam nut on the incorrect side.


    NOTE
    Install the intermediate shaft by pushing the holder pawl to the pinion shaft and sliding the intermediate shaft to.


    NOTE
    Install a new bolt and tighten to specification.


    NOTE
    Make sure cam nut contacts pinion shaft correctly.


    NOTE
    Make sure the holder is not deformed or interfering with the cam nut.


    NOTE
    Install the cover to the holder.


    NOTE
    Align the cover groove with the holder guide.


    NOTE
    Make sure cover is installed correctly.

    Fig. Make sure cam nut contacts pinion shaft correctly. Make sure the holder is not deformed or interfering with the cam nut. Install the cover (1) to the holder (2).

  5. Install intermediate shaft (lower side) to steering gear assembly with the following procedure.
    NOTE
    There are two different grooves, but only one that fits the holder V-guide.

    1. Install the intermediate shaft by installing the holder pawl to the pinion shaft groove and slide out the intermediate shaft using a suitable tool.
      NOTE
      Rotate the cam nut if the nut becomes misaligned. Align the cam nut V-shaped groove with the holder V-guide.

    2.  
    3. Rotate the cam nut. Align the cam nut V-shaped groove with the holder V-guide. Fit the cam nut to the holder V-guide, then install the cam nut from the holder.
    4.  
    5. Install bolt.
      NOTE
      Never deform or bend the holder.


      NOTE
      Never replace the intermediate shaft if the holder is deformed or bent.

    7. Insert a suitable tool between the cover and the holder. Then push the cover up and install the cover.

  7. Install bolt of intermediate shaft (upper side).

  9. Connect switch connectors installed to steering column assembly as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Install instrument lower finisher screw, position instrument lower finisher to connect diagnostic connector and hood release cable, and install lower finisher.
  12.  
  13. Set vehicle to the straight ahead-position.
  14.  

Inspection After Installation

  1. Rotate steering wheel to check for decentered condition, binding, noise or excessive steering effort.
  2.  
  3. Check and adjust toe as necessary.
  4.  

Steering Column Assembly



Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


NOTE

  1. Set vehicle to the straight ahead-position.

  3. Disconnect both the negative and positive battery terminals, then wait at least three minutes.
  4.  
  5. Remove combination switch and spiral cable only if steering column assembly is being replaced. Refer to Air Bags (supplemental Restraint System) in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove instrument lower finisher screw, position instrument lower finisher to disconnect diagnostic connector and hood release cable, and remove lower finisher.

  9. Remove the front foot duct (LH). Refer to Ducts And Grilles in the Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Section.
  10.  
  11. Remove steering lock escutcheon, remove steering column cover screws and remove steering column cover upper and steering column cover lower.

  13. Disconnect the key interlock cable, if equipped with CVT. Refer to Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Transaxle Section.

  15. Remove the key cylinder only if the steering column is being replaced. Refer to Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Transaxle Section.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect switch connectors installed to steering column assembly, and then disconnect harness from steering column assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove bolt of intermediate shaft (upper side).
  20.  
  21. Remove steering column assembly nuts, then remove steering column assembly from vehicle.
  22.  

Inspection After Removal



Check each part of steering column assembly for damage or other malfunctions. Replace any damaged components.
 
Measure the length, if vehicle has been involved in a minor collision. Replace steering column assembly if outside specifications as shown in the accompanying illustration.
 
Check tilt mechanism for damage or other malfunctions. Replace steering column assembly as necessary.
 
Measure steering column assembly rotating torque using Tool [ST3127S000 (J-25765-A0)]. Replace steering column assembly if outside specifications as shown in the accompanying illustration.

Fig. Measure the length (L) as shown, if vehicle has been involved in a minor collision. Replace steering column assembly if outside specifications.

 

To install:

  1. Install steering column assembly nuts, then install steering column assembly to vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the steering column assembly nuts to 144 inch lbs. (16.7 Nm), and the steering wheel nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34.3 Nm).

  5. Install bolt of intermediate shaft (upper side).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34.3 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect switch connectors installed to steering column assembly, and then connect harness to steering column assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the key cylinder only if the steering column is being replaced. Refer to Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Transaxle Section.
  12.  
  13. Connect the key interlock cable, if equipped with CVT. Refer to Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Transaxle Section.
  14.  
  15. Install steering lock escutcheon, install steering column cover screws and install steering column cover upper and steering column cover lower.
  16.  
  17. Install the front foot duct (LH). Refer to Ducts And Grilles in the Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Section.
  18.  
  19. Install instrument lower finisher screw, position instrument lower finisher to connect diagnostic connector and hood release cable, and install lower finisher.
  20.

Inspection After Installation

Check tilt mechanism operating range.

After installing steering column assembly, perform self-diagnosis of EPS system with CONSULT to ensure correct operation.
 
Check and adjust toe as necessary.
