NOTE
The manufacturer refers to this component as a -driveshaft-.

On-Vehicle Inspection and Service

  1. Check driveshaft mounting point and joint for looseness and other damage.
  2.  
  3. Check boot for cracks and other damage.
  4.  
  5. Replace or repair components as necessary.
    NOTE
    When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc., cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spilling.

  6.  
  7. Remove wheel and tire using power tool.
  8.  
  9. Remove wheel sensor from steering knuckle. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor in the Brakes Section.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  10.  
  11. Remove cotter pin, then loosen lock nut using power tool.
    WARNING
    Temporarily leave the lock nut installed to prevent damage to threads.

  12.  
  13. Remove transverse link ball joint nut and bolt. Then, separate transverse link from steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Separate the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool and wood block, and then remove lock nut.
    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  17. Remove the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the wheel hub and bearing assembly,


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

  18.  
  19. Remove driveshaft from transaxle assembly side, using suitable tool.
    NOTE
    Make sure that circlip is attached on the edge.


    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the transaxle.


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

Inspection After Removal

  1. Move joint up/down, left/right, and in axial direction. Check for any rough movement or significant looseness.
  2.  
  3. Check boot for cracks or other damage, and for grease leakage.
  4.  
  5. If damaged, disassemble driveshaft to verify damage, and repair or replace as necessary.

To install:


NOTE
When removing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc., cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spilling.

  1. Install new circlip on driveshaft in the circlip groove on transaxle side.
    NOTE
    Make sure the new circlip on the driveshaft is securely fastened.


    WARNING
    In order to prevent damage to differential side oil seal, place Tool onto oil seal before inserting driveshaft as shown. Slide driveshaft into slide joint and tap with a hammer to install securely.


    NOTE
    After inserting driveshaft, try to pull the driveshaft out of the transaxle by hand. If it pulls out, the circlip is not properly meshed with the transaxle side gear.


    NOTE
    Apply grease Molykote M77 to contact surface between wheel husband driveshaft. Use sufficient grease to completely coat contact area.

    Fig. In order to prevent damage to differential side oil seal, place Tool [KV38105500 (J-33904)] onto oil seal before inserting driveshaft as shown. Slide driveshaft into slide joint and tap with a hammer to install securely

  3. Tighten lock nut.
    NOTE
    Do not reuse non-reusable parts.

  5. Tighten ball joint to the specification as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  7. Tighten the wheel nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check transaxle fluid level. Refer to Fluids & Lubricants in the Transaxles Section.
    NOTE
    Make sure that circlip is attached on the edge.


    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the transaxle.


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

  11. Remove driveshaft from transaxle assembly side, using suitable tool.
    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the wheel hub and bearing assembly,


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.


    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  13. Remove the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  14.  
  15. Separate the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool and wood block, and then remove lock nut.
    WARNING
    Temporarily leave the lock nut installed to prevent damage to threads.

  16.  
  17. Remove transverse link ball joint nut and bolt. Then, separate transverse link from steering knuckle.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  18.  
  19. Remove cotter pin, then loosen lock nut using power tool.
  20.  
  21. Remove wheel sensor from steering knuckle. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor in the Brakes Section.
  22.  
  23. Remove wheel and tire using power tool.
  24.

NOTE

  1. Remove wheel and tire using power tool.

  3. Remove wheel sensor from steering knuckle. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor in the Brakes Section.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  5. Remove cotter pin, then loosen lock nut using power tool.
    WARNING
    Temporarily leave the lock nut installed to prevent damage to threads.

  6.  
  7. Remove transverse link ball joint nut and bolt. Then, remove transverse link from steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Separate the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool and wood block, and then remove lock nut.
    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  11. Remove the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
    WARNING

  13. Remove the support bearing bracket plate bolts and support bearing bracket plate.

  15. Remove the driveshaft from the transaxle assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the transaxle.


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

  17. If necessary, remove the support bearing bracket bolts and the support bearing bracket.
  18.  

Inspection After Removal


NOTE
Move joint up/down, left/right, and in axial direction. Check for any rough movement or significant looseness.

To install:


WARNING
In order to prevent damage to differential side oil seal, place Tool onto oil seal before inserting driveshaft as shown. Slide driveshaft into slide joint and tap with a hammer to install securely.

  1. When installing the support bearing bracket, note the following:
    1. Tighten the support bearing bracket bolts in two stages, in the order as shown.
    2.  
    3. Install the support bearing bracket plate with the notch upward. Tighten the plate bolts in two stages.

  3. Apply grease Molykote M77 to contact surface between wheel hub and driveshaft. Use sufficient grease to completely coat contact area.
    1. Tighten lock nut.
      NOTE
      Do not reuse non-reusable parts.

  5. Tighten ball joint to the specification as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  7. Tighten the wheel nuts. Tighten the wheel nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).

    NOTE

  11. If necessary, install the support bearing bracket bolts and the support bearing bracket.

  13. Install the driveshaft to the transaxle assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the wheel hub and bearing assembly,


    NOTE
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    NOTE
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

  14.  
  15. Install the support bearing bracket plate bolts and support bearing bracket plate.
    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  17. Install the driveshaft to the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  18.  
  19. Replace the driveshaft to the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool and wood block, and then install lock nut.
    WARNING
    Temporarily leave the lock nut installed to prevent damage to threads.

  20.  
  21. Install transverse link ball joint nut and bolt. Then, install transverse link to steering knuckle.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  22.  
  23. Install cotter pin, then tighten lock nut using power tool.
  24.  
  25. Install wheel sensor to steering knuckle. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor in the Brakes Section.
    NOTE
    When installing components such as hoses, tubes/lines, etc., cap or plug openings to prevent fluid from spilling.

  27. Install wheel and tire using power tool.
