Specific to:

Toyota Sienna 1998-2000

Check the bearing play in the axial direction and also check the axle hub deviation. The maximum play for both checks should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If greater than the specified maximum, replace the bearing. The wheel bearing is not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Sienna 1998-2000

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Fender apron seal

  5. Check the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation, as follows:
    1. Remove the 2 brake caliper set bolts.
    2.  
    3. Hang the caliper using stiff wire on the shock absorber assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove the rotor.
    6.  
    7. Place a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
    8.  
    9. Backlash maximum should read 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If greater than specified, replace the bearing.
    10.  
    11. Using the dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside and hub bolt. Maximum is 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If greater than specified, replace the axle hub.
    12.  

  6.  
  7. Install the rotor and caliper assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the shaft boot or Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor rotor.


    NOTE
    Support caliper from the vehicle using wire.



    Cotter pin (discard it) and lockcap off the center hub nut
     
    Driveshaft locknut, by applying the front brakes
     
    Tie rod end, from the steering knuckle
     
    Left and right stabilizer end brackets, from the lower arms
     
    Both nuts and the lower arm from the ball joint
     
    Driveshaft from the axle hub. Secure the shaft aside using wire.
     



    Both brake caliper mounting bolts and the caliper.
     



    Brake rotor
     
    Sensor from the steering knuckle, if equipped with ABS
     
    Both nuts from the lower end of the shock
     
    Steering knuckle and hub assembly
     

  10.  
  11. Clamp the steering knuckle in a vise with soft jaws to protect the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dust deflector from the hub, using a screwdriver
     
    Bearing inner oil seal, by prying it from the knuckle
     
    Snapring from the knuckle bore
     
    Dust deflector from the steering knuckle
     
    Axle hub, by pulling it from the dust deflector, using a 2-armed mechanical puller
     
    Inner (inside) bearing race from the bearing, using the puller
     
    Sensor control rotor from the axle hub, using Torx® wrench
     
    Outer bearing race, using the puller
     
    Outer bearing seal, using the puller
     

  14.  
  15. Position the inner (outside) race inside the bearing.
  16.  
  17. Using a brass rod, tap the bearing from the steering knuckle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean all the oil seal and bearing seating surfaces with a clean, dry rag.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing into the bore, using a Bearing Driver tool 09608-32010 and a press
     
    New outer oil seal, driving it into the steering knuckle, by inserting the seal side lip into the factory tool
     
    Brake disc cover to the steering knuckle with the bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Apply multi-purpose grease between the oil seal lip, oil seal and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Align the speed sensor holes in the dust deflector and steering knuckle, if equipped with ABS.



    Hub, by pressing it into the knuckle
     
    New snapring into the knuckle
     
    New oil seal, by pressing it into the knuckle once lubricated with multi-purpose grease
     
    Dust deflector, by pressing it into the knuckle.
     



    Ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle/hub assembly and temporarily install the lower shock bolts
     
    Lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the bolt and nuts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Tie rod to the knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Tighten the lower shock nuts to 156 ft. lbs. (211 Nm).
     
    Both side stabilizer end brackets to the lower arm. Tighten the fasteners to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
     
    Front ABS sensor. Tighten it to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Front brake rotor and caliper. Tighten the caliper bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
     
    Driveshaft locknut, by applying the brakes. Tighten it to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm).
     
    Lockcap and new cotter pin
     
    Front fender apron seal
     
    Front wheel. Tighten the lug nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
