Powertrain Control Malfunction

Possible Causes:

C0298 A requested torque signal malfunction is only one possible cause for the PCM to lose the ability to perform traction control. DTC C0298 may set due to engine overheating, throttle actuator control failure, loss of ignition timing control by the PCM, etc. If DTC P0856 has not set, refer to the following in order to identify other possible causes of DTC C0298:

Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation

Possible Causes:

Inspect for the following items:



A loose or missing distributor hold down bolt
 
A loose CMP sensor causing a variance in the sensor signal
 
An incorrectly installed distributor--One tooth off in either Advance or Retard positions
 
A loose distributor rotor on the distributor shaft
 
Excessive free play in the timing chain and gear assembly

Turbocharger Boost Control Position Not Learned

Possible Causes:



If there is a loss of ignition voltage to ECM terminal C1-76 this DTC may set. Verify this circuit is not shorted to ground or open. Verify the supply fuse for this circuit is not open.
 
If any service has been performed on the turbocharger or on the turbocharger components, a turbocharger relearn must be performed. Failure to perform the turbocharger learn procedure may cause other DTCs to set. Refer to Turbocharger Learn .
 

Trouble Code: P0045



Turbocharger Boost Control Solenoid Control Circuit

Possible Causes:



If there is a loss of ignition voltage to terminal C1-76 at the ECM this DTC may set. Verify the circuit is not shorted to ground, open, or has an open supply fuse.
 
Engine running, increase the engine speed to 1,500 RPM and maintain. With a scan tool, command the TC Vane Pos. Ctrl. Solenoid ON and OFF. The TC Vane Position Sensor parameter should increase to 95-97 percent when the TC solenoid is commanded ON and decrease to near 0 percent when commanded OFF.

Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Too Low

Possible Causes:

P0087



Gasoline contamination of the fuel may cause this DTC to set. Refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis .
 
When ambient temperatures are below 0°C (32°F), the fuel tank pickup screen may be iced over from water in the fuel tank.
 
When power enhancing devices have been attached to the fuel rail pressure sensor circuits, this DTC may set and adversely effect the fuel system components.
 
If the fuel pressure valve is not torqued correctly, the valve will leak fuel into the fuel return system causing this DTC to set. The fuel pressure relief valve uses a bite type seal, and proper torque is essential for valve to rail sealing. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .
 
A sticking FRP regulator may cause this DTC to set.
 
High fuel injector return flow may cause this DTC to set.
 
The addition of fuel system enhancements, such as auxiliary fuel tanks or add on fuel filters may relate to driveability complaints.
 



Driveability concerns may not occur with this DTC present.
 
If the fuel system pressure is actually too high, a fuel knock and smoke condition will exist.
 
A sticking FRP regulator may cause this DTC to set.
 

Trouble Code: P0088



Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Too High

Possible Causes:

P0087



Gasoline contamination of the fuel may cause this DTC to set. Refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis .
 
When ambient temperatures are below 0°C (32°F), the fuel tank pickup screen may be iced over from water in the fuel tank.
 
When power enhancing devices have been attached to the fuel rail pressure sensor circuits, this DTC may set and adversely effect the fuel system components.
 
If the fuel pressure valve is not torqued correctly, the valve will leak fuel into the fuel return system causing this DTC to set. The fuel pressure relief valve uses a bite type seal, and proper torque is essential for valve to rail sealing. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .
 
A sticking FRP regulator may cause this DTC to set.

Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Circuit

Possible Causes:



There are no driveability concerns associated with the FRP regulator unless a DTC is present. The most likely cause of this DTC is a sticking FRP regulator.
 
If the fuel system pressure is actually too high, a fuel knock and smoke condition will exist.
 
If the fuse that supplies voltage to terminal C1-76 of the ECM is open, this DTC will set.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance

Possible Causes:



Inspect the harness of the MAF sensor to verify that it is not routed too close to the following components:

The secondary ignition wires or coils
 
Any solenoids
 
Any relays
 
Any motors
 

A low minimum air rate through the sensor bore at idle or during deceleration may cause this DTC to set. Inspect for any vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.Inspect for any contamination or debris on the sensing elements of the MAF sensor.Inspect the air induction system for any water intrusion. Any water that reaches the MAF sensor will skew the sensor and may cause this DTC to set.A wide open throttle acceleration from a stop should cause the MAF sensor parameter on the scan tool to increase rapidly. This increase should be from 3-10 g/s at idle to 150 g/s or more at the time of the 1-2 shift. If the increase is not observed, inspect for a restriction in the induction system or the exhaust system.Inspect for a skewed or stuck ECT sensor.A high resistance of 15 ohms or more on the ignition 1 voltage circuit may cause this DTC to set. A high resistance may cause a driveability concern before this DTC sets.Inspect for a skewed or stuck TP sensor.The barometric pressure (BARO) that is used to calculate the predicted mass air flow value is initially based on the MAP sensor at key ON. When the engine is running, the BARO value is continually updated near wide open throttle. A skewed MAP sensor will cause the calculated mass air flow value to be inaccurate and may result in a no start condition. The value shown for the MAP sensor parameter varies with the altitude. With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, 101 kPa is the approximate value near sea level. This value will decrease by approximately 3 kPa for every 305 meters (1,000 feet) of altitude.A high resistance on the 5-volt reference circuit of the MAP sensor may cause this DTC to set.A high resistance on the low reference circuit of the MAP sensor may cause this DTC to set.If the condition is intermittent, refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections .

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit Low Frequency

Possible Causes:



Inspect the harness of the MAF sensor to verify that it is not routed too close to the following components:

The secondary ignition wires or coils
 
Any solenoids
 
Any relays
 
Any motors
 

Inspect for any contamination or debris on the sensing elements of the MAF sensor.A wide open throttle (WOT) acceleration from a stop should cause the MAF sensor parameter on the scan tool to increase rapidly. This increase should be from 3-10 g/s at idle to 150 g/s or more at the time of the 1-2 shift. If the increase is not observed, inspect for a restriction in the induction system or the exhaust system.A high resistance of 15 ohms or more on the ground circuit or the ignition 1 circuit of the MAF sensor may cause this DTC to set. A high resistance may cause a driveability concern before this DTC sets.
 

Trouble Code: P0103



Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit High Frequency

Possible Causes:



Inspect the air induction system for any water intrusion. The water rapidly cools the hot sensing elements in the sensor, causing a false indication of excessive air flow. Any water that reaches the MAF sensor will skew the sensor, and may cause this DTC to set.
 
A poor connection in the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the MAF sensor may cause this DTC to set.
