Removal & Installation



4.3L Engines

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cooling fan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts and pulley.
  12.  
  13. Using a crankshaft balancer removal tool, remove the balancer from its mounting on the engine.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Position the damper to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that the crankshaft balancer weight is installed in the proper location.

  5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engines

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the A/C drive belt, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
  10.  
  11. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the teeth of tool J-42386A mesh with the teeth of the flywheel. It is not necessary to mark the balancer prior to removal.

  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Using a crankshaft balancer removal tool, remove the balancer from its mounting on the engine.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Position the damper to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Be sure that the balancer is properly positioned on the crankshaft.
    NOTE
    The old bolt will be used only for first pass of the balancer installation. Install a new bolt and tighten for the second, third and fourth pass of the procedure.

  5. Tighten the old bolt to 240 ft. lbs. (330 NM). Remove and discard the old bolt.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the new bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Retighten an additional 140 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Continue the installation in reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Using the GM diagnostic scan tool, or equivalent, refer to the on-screen reprogramming directions and perform the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure.
