Exhaust Manifold

Removal & Installation



4.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the converter to exhaust manifold nuts. Discard the seal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oxygen sensor, right side.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield retaining bolts and shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spark plugs.
  16.  
  17. Remove the exhaust manifold retaining bolts. Remove the exhaust manifold from its mounting.
  18.  
  19. Discard the gasket.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required. Be sure to use new exhaust manifold gaskets.

  1. Position the exhaust manifold to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the retaining nuts to specification.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for exhaust noise and leaks. Correct as required.
  8.  

4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engines
Left Side

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Install tool J42640 into the steering column lower access hole. Lock the steering column.

  7. Remove the left wheelhouse assembly.

  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the converter to exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Discard the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Mark the relationship of the upper intermediate steering shaft to the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering shaft coupling bolt and nut from the upper intermediate shaft. Separate the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column, position both shafts out of the way.

  21. Remove the exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Remove the exhaust manifold from the vehicle.

  23. Discard the gasket.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required. Be sure to use new exhaust manifold gaskets.


NOTE
An improperly installed gasket or leaking exhaust system may effect On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II system performance.


NOTE
Do not apply sealant to the first three threads of the bolt.

  1. Position the exhaust manifold to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the retaining nuts to specification.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for exhaust noise and leaks. Correct as required.
  8.  

Right Side

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oxygen sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right wheelhouse assembly.

  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the converter to exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Discard the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil level indicator tube assembly.

  19. Remove the exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Remove the exhaust manifold from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Discard the gasket.
