Diagnosis & Testing

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Check the fuses for the mirror circuit. Verify there is 12 volts at the fuse terminal. If voltage is not present, check the wiring.
  4.
  5. Remove the mirror switch.
  6.
  7. With the ignition OFF, check for continuity between terminal B and ground. If there is no continuity or high resistance, inspect the wire harness for opens.
  8.
  9. With the ignition ON, use a test light and verify it lights when placed between terminal G and ground. If the test light does not illuminate, check the fuse. If the fuse is ok, there is an open in the wiring.
  10.
  11. Turn the ignition OFF. Attach the switch to the harness. Detach the electrical connector from the inoperative mirror. Using an ohmmeter, test the resistance between each terminal as follows:
    1. Terminal 6 and ground while holding the UP position.
    2.
    3. Terminal 1 and ground while holding the DOWN position.
    4.
    5. Terminal 6 and ground while holding the LEFT position.
    6.
    7. Terminal 2 and ground while holding the RIGHT position.
    8.

  12.
  13. The ohmmeter should read 5 ohms. If greater than this, check for high resistance/open in the wiring.
  14.
  15. Turn the ignition ON. Using a test light, check between each terminal as follows:
    1. Terminal and ground while holding the UP position.
    2.
    3. Terminal 6 and ground while holding the DOWN position.
    4.
    5. Terminal 2 and ground while holding the LEFT position.
    6.
    7. Terminal 6 and ground while holding the RIGHT position.
    8.

  16.
  17. If the test light illuminates in each of the steps but the motor does not work, then the motor is defective. If not, there is a short to ground or an open in the wiring.

Removal & Installation

Mirror Motor

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

CAUTION
Wear safety gloves when performing this procedure to reduce the chance of injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Place masking tape over the mirror glass. Remove the mirror courtesy lamp from the housing, if equipped.
  6.
  7. Apply several layers of tape to the lower mirror housing edge to protect the finish.
  8.
  9. To remove the glass, place the mirror face flat to the housing. Insert a suitable rigid plastic tool (1.5 inch wide). Insert the tool between the mirror lower housing edge and the lower edge of the mirror glass. Holding the tool in place, press forward on the lower edge of the glass. This will release the tabs from the motor/actuator ring.
  10.
  11. Remove the mirror glass.
