Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.

  9. Remove the upper shock absorber mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Properly support the lower control arm assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shock absorber retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the component from its mounting.

  17. Position the shock in a suitable holding fixture, CH-48845 or equivalent.
    NOTE
    If the vehicle is equipped with electronic suspension be sure that the upper retaining bracket of the tool is adjusted properly so that it does not damage the suspension mount.

  19. With the shock properly positioned compress the spring.

  21. Remove and discard the shock nut. Remove the lower shock and spring lower insulator.
  22.  
  23. Remove the strut mount, spring upper seat, strut bumper, upper insulator and spring.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.


NOTE
The inboard strut mounting studs are spaced closer together than the outboard stud. The outboard stud should be facing toward the outside.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the new shock absorber nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) for vehicles equipped with electronic suspension.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the new shock absorber nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) for vehicles equipped without electronic suspension.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the upper mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the lower mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
