Parking Brake Shoes

For vehicles with rear disc brakes the parking brake uses a drum-in-hat style parking brake. For vehicles with rear drum brakes the brake shoes serve as the parking brakes.

Adjustment



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Set the J 21177-A so that the J 21177-A contacts the inside diameter of the rotor.

  5. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  6.  
  7. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A.

  9. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the opposite side.
  10.  
  11. The clearance between the park brake shoe and the rotor is 0.026 inch (0.66 mm).

Removal & Installation



Vehicles With RPO JD9
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake shoe retaining clip bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake shoe retaining clip.

  15. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate by removing the tips from the slots and sliding the shoe (2) towards the retaining spring (3) until the shoe is disengaged from the spring.

  17. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it has cleared the flange.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe assembly (2) to the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it is behind the flange.
  6.  
  7. Position the park brake shoe on the inboard side of the actuation.
  8.  
  9. Slide the parking brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  18.  
  19. As required, adjust the parking brake.
  20.  

Vehicles With RPO JH6 And JH7
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake shoe adjuster.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hold down spring. Remove the hold down spring pin.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the park brake cable.
