Removal & Installation



With Disc Brakes

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Properly support the rear assembly, using the proper support tool.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Drain the rear differential fluid. Be sure to properly dispose of used fluid.
  10.  
  11. Remove the driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake line bracket bolts. Suspend the brake lines using mechanics wire, or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Remove the calipers from the mounting brackets. Do not disconnect the caliper brake lines. Suspend the calipers using mechanics wire, or equivalent.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle brackets.
  20.  
  21. Remove the vent hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove the nuts and washers from the U-bolts. Remove the U-bolts, the spring plates and spacers from the axle assembly.
  24.  
  25. Carefully lower the rear assembly and remove it from the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Position the rear assembly under the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Align the rear assembly with the rear springs.
  4.  
  5. Connect the spacers, spring plates and U-bolts to the rear assembly.
  6.  
  7. Raise the rear assembly into position.
  8.  
  9. Install the U-bolt nuts and washers (if equipped).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the retaining nuts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm), for 1500 and 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm) for 2500.
  12.  
  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Fill the differential with the proper grade and type fluid.
  16.  
  17. Road test the vehicle, correct problems as required.

With Drum Brakes

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008


NOTE
The manufacturer does not provide a comprehensive procedure for removing this component. The following is only a guideline. Care should be used when performing this procedure to avoid damage to the vehicle and to yourself.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Properly support the rear assembly, using the proper support tool.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Drain the rear differential fluid. Be sure to properly dispose of used fluid.
  10.  
  11. Remove the driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the necessary components in order to remove the rear assembly from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the necessary components in order to remove the rear assembly from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle brackets.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nuts and washers from the U-bolts. Remove the U-bolts, the spring plates and spacers from the axle assembly.
  20.  
  21. Carefully lower the rear assembly. Check to be sure nothing is still attached to the rear assembly. Remove the rear assembly from the vehicle.

To install:
