Removal & Installation



10.5 Inch Rear Axles

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Flange bolts

  9. Lightly rap the axle shaft with a soft-faced hammer in order to loosen the shaft. Grip the rib on the axle shaft flange with a locking pliers. Twist the axle shaft flange in order to start the axle shaft removal. Remove the axle shaft from the tube.

  11. Remove the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Clean the axle shaft flange and the outside face of the hub assembly. Inspect all the parts. Replace the parts as necessary.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Gasket onto the axle shaft
     
    Gasket and axle shaft into the tube. Ensure the shaft splines mesh into the differential side gear. Align the holes in the axle flange and the gasket with the holes in the hub.
     
    Axle flange bolts and tighten to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm).
     
    Rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    Wheel and tire

8.6 And 9.5 Inch Axles

Specific to:

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Drain the differential fluid. Be sure to properly dispose of used fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake drum, if equipped with rear brakes.
  12.  
  13. Remove the caliper mounting bracket, if equipped with disc brakes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear axle cover. Discard the gasket.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the pinion gear shaft bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pinion gear shaft, on non-locking differential equipped vehicles.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with locking differential, remove the pinion gear shaft part way from the differential case. Use a flat bladed tool and rotate the lock until the lock aligns with the thrust block.

  23. Push on the axle shaft and remove the lock.
  24.  
  25. Remove the axle shaft assembly.
    NOTE
    If the shaft is difficult to remove, install a slide hammer removal tool and remove the shaft.

  27. As required, carefully remove the seal and bearing from its mounting. Do not reuse the original seal.
  28.  

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Position the bearing and seal to its mounting.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the bearing is fully seated in the rear axle shaft housing .

  3. Using an installer tool and driver, install the bearing then the seal. Drive the tool into the bore until the axle shaft seal bottoms flush with the tube.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shaft to its mounting. Use care not to damage the seal.
    NOTE
    Pull out on the axle shaft after the lock has been installed to ensure that the lock is seated properly.

  6.  
  7. Install the lock in the axle, if equipped with non-locking differential.

  9. Install the lock on the axle shaft, if equipped with locking differential.
    NOTE
    On locking differential, keep the differential pinion shaft slightly withdrawn.

  11. Install the differential gear shaft. Install a new gear shaft bolt. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm), for 8.6 axle and 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), for 9.5 axle.
  12.  
  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Be sure to fill the differential with the proper grade and type fluid.
