Removal & Installation




NOTE
Do not disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery until a period of at least one minute has passed after performing the following: turning the ignition to OFF, without pausing at ACC, and without applying the brake pedal. These steps are necessary to allow the brake system pressure relief procedure to occur. Failure to follow these steps may result in warning lamps and/or DTC-s being set pertaining to interruption of the pressure relief procedure. Other vehicle systems may also be affected by not allowing a one minute duration for vehicle power down.

To disconnect the negative battery cable, proceed as follows. Turn off all lamps and accessories. Turn the ignition OFF without pausing at ACC, remove the ignition key. Wait at least one minute before disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery. Reposition the negative battery cable cover from the terminal. Rotate the lock lever counterclockwise in order to disconnect the cable from the battery.


NOTE
After performing the service procedure, to connect the negative battery cable, rotate the lock lever clockwise until an audible click is heard. Position the cover over the terminal.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine shield, if equipped.

  9. Remove the front driveshaft. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  10.  
  11. Drain the transfer case. Properly dispose of used fluid.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transfer case control rod, MP 1222/1225/1226-NOG units.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the electrical connectors, as required.
  16.  
  17. Support the transmission, using the proper support fixture.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transmission mount retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember from its mounting. Remove the transmission mount.

  21. Support the transfer case using the proper support fixture.

  23. Remove the transfer case adapter nuts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the fuel pipe bracket from the studs.
    NOTE
    Pull back on the case in order to position the unit so that it can be rotated parallel to the transmission.

  27. Remove the transfer case from the adapter.
  28.  
  29. Rotate the case perpendicular to the torsion bar mounting bracket.
  30.  
  31. Lower the transfer case.
  32.  
  33. Remove the gasket from the transfer case. Remove the transfer case from the transmission jack (holding fixture).

To install:


NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    When installing a new transfer case gasket, the gasket must be installed with the tab oriented up, and the yellow printing towards the front of the vehicle. Install the gasket without the use of any type of sealant or lubricant.

  3. Tighten the transfer case adapter nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the crossmember mounting bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) BW 4485-NR3.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the crossmember mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (97 Nm) except BW 4485-NR3.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the transmission mount retaining nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Be sure to fill the transfer case with the proper grade and type fluid.
