Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor

Operation



The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor has a 5-volt reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and a signal circuit. The control module supplies 5 volts to the MAP sensor on a 5-volt reference circuit, and provides a ground on a low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a voltage signal to the control module on a signal circuit relative to the intake manifold pressure changes.

Removal & Installation



2.0L (LNF) Engine
  1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
  2.  
  3. Remove the MAP sensor bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the MAP sensor and O-ring seal from the intake manifold.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the MAP sensor to the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Install the MAP sensor bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the MAP sensor.
  10.  

2.4L (LE5) Engine
  1. Remove the throttle body.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the MAP sensor and the MAP sensor port seal if it is still retained in the intake manifold
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the MAP sensor with the port seal into the intake manifold
  2.  
  3. Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the throttle body.
  6.  

Testing



  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
  2.  
  3. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal no. 2 and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Engine Control Module (ECM).
    2.

  5. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal no. 1 and ground.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  
    3. If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Verify the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter is less than 2 kPa.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal no. 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal no. 3 and the 5-volt reference circuit terminal no. 1. Verify the scan tool MAP parameter is greater than 126 kPa.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

  10.  
  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the MAP sensor.
  12.  

To test (MAP) sensor observe the following procedure:



Ignition OFF, remove the MAP sensor.
 
Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal no. 1 and the corresponding terminal no. of the MAP sensor.
 
Install a jumper wire between the low reference circuit terminal no. no. 2 of the MAP sensor and ground.
 
Install a jumper wire at terminal no. 3 of the MAP sensor.
 
Connect a DMM between the jumper wire from terminal no. 3 of the MAP sensor and ground.
 
Ignition ON, with a vacuum pump slowly apply vacuum to the sensor while observing the voltage on the DMM. The voltage should vary between 0-5.2 volts, without any spikes or dropouts.
 
If the voltage reading is erratic, replace the MAP sensor.
 

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the MAP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal no. 2 and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

    1. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

    3. If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    4.

  7. Verify the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter is less than 2 kPa.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal no. 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.

  9. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal no. 3 and the 5-volt reference circuit terminal no. 1. Verify the scan tool MAP parameter is greater than 126 kPa.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.

  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the MAP sensor.
  12.  

To test (MAP) sensor observe the following procedure:

Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal no. 1 and the corresponding terminal no. of the MAP sensor.

Install a jumper wire at terminal no.  3 of the MAP sensor.
 
Connect a DMM between the jumper wire from terminal no. 3 of the MAP sensor and ground.
 
Ignition ON, with a vacuum pump slowly apply vacuum to the sensor while observing the voltage on the DMM. The voltage should vary between 0-5.2 volts, without any spikes or dropouts.
 
If the voltage reading is erratic, replace the MAP sensor.
