Fig. 2.4L (LE5) & 2.0L (LNF) Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the ECT sensor.
  2.
  3. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal no. A and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
    2.

  4.
  5. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool ECT parameter is less than -39°C (-38°F).
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal no. B or 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.

  6.
  7. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal no. B or 2 and the low reference circuit terminal no. A or 1. Verify the scan tool ECT parameter is greater than 149°C (300°F).
  8.
  9. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  10.
  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the ECT sensor.
  12.
  13. Measure and record the resistance of the ECT sensor at various ambient temperatures, then compare those measurements to the temperature versus resistance table.
