Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters

Inspection



  1. Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the contact area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the contact area. If excessive pitting or damage is present replace components as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Check for valve tappet face wear.
  4.  
  5. Check for excessive valve tappet clearance.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



2.0L (LNF) Engine
Exhaust
  1. Remove the camshaft position intake actuator. Refer to timing chain and gears.
  2.  
  3. Mark the camshaft bearing caps to ensure they are installed in the same position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts and caps. Remove each bolt on each cap one turn at a time until there is no spring tension pushing on the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts and cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust camshaft.

  11. Remove the valve rocker arms. Keep all of the rocker arms and hydraulic valve lash adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.

  13. Remove the valve rocker arms.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Keep all of the rocker arms and hydraulic valve lash adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the hydraulic valve lash adjusters into their bores in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the hydraulic valve lash adjusters.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the valve tips.
  6.  
  7. Position the rocker arms on the tip of the valve stem and on the valve lash adjuster. Lubricate the rocker arms.
    NOTE
    Used rocker arms MUST be returned to the original position on the camshaft. If the camshaft is being replaced, the rocker arms MUST also be replaced.

  8.  
  9. Position the rocker arms on the tip of the valve stem and on the valve lash adjuster. Lubricate the rocker arms.
  10.  
  11. Install the exhaust camshaft. Lubricate the camshaft.
  12.  
  13. Position the camshaft bearing caps. Install the bearing cap bolts hand tight.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until they are seated.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the camshaft position exhaust actuator.
  20.  
  21. Install the camshaft cover with new gasket and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  22.  

Intake
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshaft position intake actuator. Refer to timing chain and gears.
  6.  
  7. Remove the high pressure fuel pump.
  8.  
  9. Mark the camshaft bearing caps to ensure they are installed in the same position.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts and caps. Remove each bolt on each cap one turn at a time until there is no spring tension pushing on the camshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the high pressure fuel pump roller lifter.

  15. Remove the cylinder head opening plate bolts and plate.

  17. Remove the rear bearing cap bolts and cap.
  18.  
  19. Remove the intake camshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the valve rocker arms. Keep all of the roller followers and hydraulic valve lash adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.

  23. Remove the valve rocker arms.
  24.  
  25. Remove the hydraulic valve lash adjusters. Keep all of the rocker arms and hydraulic valve lash adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.

To install:

  1. Install the hydraulic valve lash adjusters into their bores in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the valve tips.
    NOTE
    Used valve rocker arms MUST be returned to their original position on the camshaft. If the camshaft is being replaced, the rocker arms MUST also be replaced.

  6.  
  7. Position the valve rocker arms on the tip of the valve stem and on the valve lash adjuster. Lubricate the rocker arms.
  8.  
  9. Install the intake camshaft. Lubricate the camshaft.
  10.  
  11. Apply a 3.5 mm (0.138 in) bead of sealer (1) to the cylinder head.
  12.  
  13. In areas were the rear bearing cap ends on the perimeter rail, extend the bead of sealer 4.0 mm (0.1575 in) beyond the edge of the cap (a).
  14.  
  15. Run the bead of sealer to within 4.0 mm (0.1575 in) of end points (b). Sealer application diagram

  17. Install the rear bearing cap and bolts, tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).

  19. Install the cylinder head opening plate and bolts, tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).

  21. Install the high pressure fuel pump roller lifter.
  22.  
  23. Position the camshaft bearing caps. Install the bearing cap bolts hand tight.
    WARNING
    The caps should be installed on the cylinder head in sequence as shown on top of the bearing caps.

  25. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until they are seated.

  27. Tighten bearing cap bolts to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).

  29. Install the high pressure fuel pump.
  30.  
  31. Install the camshaft position intake actuator.

  33. Install the camshaft cover with new gasket and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  34.  

2.4L (LE5) Engine
Exhaust
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper timing chain guide bolts and guide.
  6.  
  7. Install tool J 43655, or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard both the intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Slide the camshaft sprockets forward.
    WARNING
    Remove each bolt on each cap one turn at a time until there is no spring tension pushing on the camshaft.

  12.  
  13. Mark the bearing caps to ensure they are installed in the original position.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bearing cap bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bearing caps.
  18.  
  19. Remove the exhaust camshaft.
    WARNING
    Keep all of the roller followers and hydraulic adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.

  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft roller followers.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hydraulic element adjusters.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the hydraulic element adjusters into their bores in the cylinder head. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the valve tips with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
    WARNING
    Used roller followers MUST be returned to the original position on the camshaft. If the camshaft is being replaced, the roller followers actuated by the camshaft must also be replaced.

  4.  
  5. Position the roller followers on the tip of the valve stem and on the lash adjuster. Apply lubricate GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust camshaft. Lubricate with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft bearing caps.
  10.  
  11. Install and hand tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts.
  12.  
  13. Ensure that the alignment notches are aligned with the camshaft sprocket.
  14.  
  15. Install and hand tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until they are seated.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts.
  20.  
  21. Hand tighten the NEW camshaft sprocket bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tool.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) plus 30 degrees.
  26.  
  27. Install the upper timing chain guide and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the camshaft cover with new gasket and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  30.  

Intake
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft cover.

  7. Install tool J 43655, or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard both the intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Slide the camshaft sprockets forward.
    NOTE
    Remove each bolt on each cap one turn at a time until there is no spring tension pushing on the camshaft.

  12.  
  13. Mark the bearing caps to ensure they are installed in the original position.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bearing cap bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bearing caps.
  18.  
  19. Remove the intake camshaft.
    NOTE
    Keep all of the roller followers and hydraulic adjusters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their respective locations.

To install:

  1. Install the hydraulic element lash adjusters into their bores in the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the valve tips.
    NOTE
    Used roller followers MUST be returned to their original position on the camshaft. If the camshaft is being replaced, the roller followers actuated by the camshaft must also be replaced.

  6.  
  7. Position the camshaft roller followers on the tip of the valve stem and on the lash adjuster. Lubricate the roller followers with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Install the intake camshaft. Lubricate with GM PN 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft bearing caps. Hand-tighten the cap bolts.
  12.  
  13. Ensure that the alignment notches are aligned with the camshaft sprocket.

  15. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until they are seated. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  16.  
  17. Install the camshaft sprockets onto the camshafts.
  18.  
  19. Install and hand tighten new camshaft sprocket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the tool.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) plus 30 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Install the upper timing chain guide and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the camshaft cover with new gasket and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
