Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the shock module from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. DO NOT loosen the adjustment jamb nut.
    NOTE
    Loosen but DO NOT remove the nut until the ball stud has been separated from the knuckle.


    WARNING
    The ball stud must not rotate during disassembly or reassembly. Hand tools must be used to keep the ball stud from rotating. If air tools are used and the stud is allowed to rotate, damage to the ball stud and/or stud mounting hole may occur.

  13. Using the J-42188-B Ball Joint Separator, separate the ball stud from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint stud nut.
    NOTE
    Mark frame alignment cams for installation.

  17. Remove the lower control arm to frame nuts and cam.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm to frame alignment cam bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm to frame alignment cam bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm to frame nuts and cams.
  6.  
  7. Position the cams to previous marks.
  8.  
  9. Tighten lower control arm nuts to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the lower ball joint stud nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), plus an additional 135 °
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the shock module to the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the stabilizer link to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check wheel alignment.
  22.
