Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove the floor panel tunnel rear panel.
    NOTE
The following service procedure is for those vehicles equipped with a manual transmission and drive line support. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, proceed to Step 4.

  4.
  5. Remove the propeller shaft, differential and driveline support.
    NOTE
Remove only the driveshaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the driveshaft.

  6.
  7. Remove the propeller shaft from the rear differential.
  8.
  9. Carefully position the propeller shaft to the side and support using a suitable jack stand..
  10.
  11. Lower the driveshaft and the front of the RDM until disconnected.
  12.
  13. Carefully position the driveshaft out of the way and support the driveshaft using a suitable jack.
  14.
  15. Install a holding tool on the flange.

  20.
  21. Using a flat-bladed tool, remove the drive pinion seal. Take care not to damage any sealing surfaces.
  22.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the drive pinion flange sealing surface of the drive pinion seal with synthetic gear oil.
  2.
  3. Using a seal driver, install the pinion seal to the differential.
  4.
  5. Install the pinion flange on the drive pinion shaft.
    NOTE
The pinion shaft threads and the pinion flange nut must be free of residue and debris prior to application of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.

  6.
  7. Prepare the pinion shaft threads and the pinion flange nut for assembly:
    1. Thoroughly clean the residue from the pinion shaft threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    2.
    3. Thoroughly clean the residue from the pinion flange nut by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    4.

  8.
  9. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to  2 / 3 of the threaded length of the pinion shaft threads. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the pinion shaft threads.
  10.
  11. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  12.
  13. Install the drive pinion flange nut to the pinion shaft. Hold the pinion flange with the holding tool.
  14.
  15. Tighten the drive pinion flange nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
    NOTE
The following service procedure is for those vehicles equipped with a manual transmission and drive line support. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, proceed to Step 15.

  16.
  17. Install the propeller shaft, differential and driveline support.
  18.
  19. Install the propeller shaft to the differential.
  20.
  21. Install the floor panel tunnel rear panel.
  22.
  23. Inspect the fluid level.
  24.
  25. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
