Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components. Serious injury can occur. Failure to observe the correct procedure could also result in unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system and wait at least one minute.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

    The steering column
     
    The intermediate shaft
     
    The steering gear

  9. After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Remove metal collar rake pivot.
  14.  
  15. Remove plastic bushings.
  16.  
  17. Remove anti rotation bracket bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove anti rotation bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove steering angle sensor.

  23. Install steering angle sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install anti rotation bracket and bolts. Tighten bolts to 44 inch. lbs. (5 Nm).

  27. Install new plastic bushings and collar rake pivot.
  28.  
  29. Install steering column.
  30.  
  31. Enable the SIR system.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.
