Steering Column

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components. Serious injury can occur. Failure to observe the correct procedure could also result in unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system and wait at least one minute.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

    The steering column
     
    The intermediate shaft
     
    The steering gear

  9. After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  11. Remove the driver knee bolster bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect ignition start switch electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove intermediate shaft nut and bolt. Discard the bolt.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect all electrical connectors as needed.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering column lower support bracket bolt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column upper support bracket nuts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering column assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the steering column assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering column upper support bracket nuts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column lower support bracket bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Reconnect all electrical connectors as needed.
  8.  
  9. Install new intermediate shaft bolt and nut, tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect ignition start switch electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column trim covers.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Install the driver knee bolster bracket.
  18.  
  19. Enable the (SIR) system.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.
