Removal & Installation



2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
    NOTE
    Loosen all of the oil pan bolts to assure that the oil pan gasket is not damaged when removing the rear main seal and end cover assembly.


    NOTE
    Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage. If the gasket is damaged, it must be replaced.

  7. Loosen the oil pan bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flexplate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear main seal adapter retaining bolts and carefully pry the adapter from the crankcase at the adapter shoulders.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Position the rear main oil seal adapter with the assembly sleeve onto the crankshaft so that the dowel sleeves fir into the guide holes.
    WARNING
    Use care not to damage the oil pan gasket.

  3. Install the rear main seal adapter-to-crankcase bolts and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the M6 oil pan bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and M8 oil pan bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Automatic Transmission Assembly, Removal & Installation.-

  3. Remove the flex plate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts holding the rear main seal carrier to the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear main seal carrier from the engine block and oil pan.
    NOTE
    The rear seal is bonded to the retainer and must be replaced as an assembly.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean all of the sealing surfaces. The retainer assembly must be replaced if the seal is torn or damaged.
  2.  
  3. Apply Mopar®® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Adhesive to the points where the oil pan and engine block are joined.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear oil seal carrier and tighten the bolts to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm) and then to 88 inch lbs. (10 N·m).
  6.  
  7. Install the flex plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
