Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before raising the vehicle, insert Special Tool 9288 Spring Blocks between the spring and the spring clamp plates.

  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper adapter. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
    WARNING
    Do not allow brake hose to support the caliper weight.

  9. Remove the retaining nut holding the tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle using special tool C-3894-A.
    NOTE
    In order to remove tension from the strut, Raise the lower control arm approximately 10 mm with a jack.

  13. Remove the strut bolts from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stop plate bolts and rotate the plate upwards with the stabilizer link attached.
  16.  
  17. Lower the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower ball joint nut from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle using Special Tool 9282.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower control arm nuts and bolts from the frame.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower control arm.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm to the frame and hand tighten the bolts.
    NOTE
    In order to remove tension from the strut, Raise the lower control arm approximately 10 mm with a jack.

  3. Install the lower ball joint into the steering knuckle and tighten to 206 ft. lbs. (280 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut bolts to the steering knuckle and tighten to 136 ft. lbs. (185 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the stop plate.
  8.  
  9. Attach the tie rod to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 96 ft. lbs. (130 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install the brake caliper adapter.
  12.  
  13. Install the front wheel.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the spring blocks between the spring and the spring clamp plates, while the vehicles wheels are on the ground.
  18.  
  19. Roll the vehicle approximately 1 mm forwards and backwards, and rock firmly.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the lower control arm nuts and bolts to the frame to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Apply brake to actuate brake pressure.
  24.  

  1. Remove the floor pan screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper strut mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear half of the wheel well inner liner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel speed sensor wire from the routing clip.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper adapter. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
    WARNING
    Do not allow brake hose to support the caliper weight.

  15. Remove the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the retaining nut holding the tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Separate the tie rod off the steering knuckle using Special Tool 9360.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower bolts from the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the strut from the steering knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower ball joint nut from the steering knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle using special tool 9282.
  28.  
  29. Remove the spring stop plate bolts and rotate the plate upwards with the stabilizer link attached.
  30.  
  31. Remove the lower control arm pivot nuts and bolts from the frame.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm to the frame. Install the pivot nuts and bolts, but only hand tighten at this time.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring stop plate. Tighten the M10 bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm). Tighten the M2 bolt to 78 ft. lbs. (106 Nm) plus 90°.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and tighten the nut to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the strut bolts to the steering knuckle and tighten to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) plus an additional 120°.
  8.  
  9. Attach the tie rod end and shield to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), then to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) plus an additional 60° turn
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel sensor wire to the routing clip.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper adapter to the knuckle. Tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N·m) plus an additional 40° turn.
  16.  
  17. Install the strut into the upper strut mounting hole
  18.  
  19. Install the rear half of the wheel well liner.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper strut bolts and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the floor pan screws and floor pan.
  26.  
  27. Raise the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Install the front wheels.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Tighten the lower control arm nuts to 125 ft. lbs. (172 Nm) plus an additional 90° with full vehicle weight.
  34.  
  35. Check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
