Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the grease cap.
  4.  
  5. Position a dial indicator against the face of the wheel hub.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the locking screw on the clamping nut.
  8.  
  9. Pull the wheel hub firmly back and forth and read off the wheel bearing play on the dial gauge. Wheel bearing play should be 0.000787- 0.00158 inches (0.02-0.04 mm).
  10.  
  11. If necessary, loosen the locking screw and adjust the wheel bearing play by loosening or tightening the clamping nut.
  12.  
  13. Retighten the locking screw and recheck the wheel bearing play.

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper adapter. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the grease cap.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bolt on the clamping nut and remove the clamping nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thrust washer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel hub and tapered roller bearing from the axle assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the wheel hub with the bearing on the axle.
  2.  
  3. Grease the outer bearing thoroughly and push into the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the thrust washer.
    NOTE
    The smooth side of the thrust washer must point toward the wheel bearing.

  7. Install the clamping nut and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm) and then loosen 1 / 2 turn.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the bearing end play. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Wheel Bearings, Adjustment.-

  11. Pack the grease cap half full with grease and coat the edge with sealant and install the cap.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper adapter.
  16.  
  17. Install the front wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

The hub/bearing assembly is pressed into the steering knuckle and is not serviceable. The steering knuckle must be replaced if the hub/bearing needs service.
