Parking Brake Shoes

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

Removal & Installation



Dual Rear Wheels
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel flange ring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front park brake cable from the pulley unit. Do not remove the rear park brake cables.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retracting springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the adjuster.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pressure springs by depressing with your fingers and twisting.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear park brake shoes. Pull the park brake shoes apart at the bottom and remove them together with the adjuster.
  18.  

To install:


NOTE
Preassemble the retracting spring with the short hook eye from the inside together with the adjuster wheel at the bottom. Fit the preassembled park brake shoes on the brake carrier.

  1. Ensure that the cable lock moves easily before installing shoes. Install the park brake shoes.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower retracting spring.
  4.  
  5. Install the pressure hold down springs by depressing with your fingers and twisting to lock in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper retracting spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the adjuster.
  10.  
  11. Install the front park brake cable to the pulley unit.
  12.  
  13. Install the disc brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel flange ring. Tighten to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brakes.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Pump the brake pedal several times to check the operation of the brakes before moving vehicle.
  24.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel flange ring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub/bearing assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retracting springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hold down springs by depressing with a pair of needle nose pliers and twisting.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear park brake shoes. Pull the park brake shoes (4) apart at the bottom and remove them together with the top spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjuster.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the pads on the support plate that the shoes ride on.
    NOTE
    Preassemble the retracting spring with the short hook eye from the inside together with the adjuster wheel at the top. Fit the preassembled park brake shoes on the brake carrier.

  3. Ensure that the cable lock moves easily before installing shoes. Install the park brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. Install the pressure hold down springs by depressing with a pair of needle nose pliers and twisting to lock in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjuster between the park brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower retracting springs.
  10.  
  11. Install the hub/bearing assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the disc brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel flange ring. Tighten to 148 ft. lbs. (200 N·m).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brakes.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Pump the brake pedal several times to check the operation of the brakes before moving vehicle.
  24.  

Single Rear Wheels
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake rotor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the front parking brake cable form the pulley unit.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the rear park brake cables.

  8.  
  9. Using Special Tool 9280, remove the retracting springs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjuster.
  12.  
  13. Using Special Tool 9281, remove the pressure springs.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake shoes. Pull the parking brake shoes apart at the bottom and remove them together from the adjuster.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Ensure that the cable lock moves easily before installing shoes. Install the parking brake shoes.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 9280, install the lower retracting spring.
  4.  
  5. Using Special Tool 9281, install the hold down springs.
  6.  
  7. Using Special Tool 9280, install the upper retracting spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the adjuster.
  10.  
  11. Install the front park brake cable to the pulley unit.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel.
  16.  
  17. Turn the adjusting wheel until it is no longer possible to rotate the rear wheel.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the adjusting wheel 3-4 teeth divisions.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the clearance, or a slight drag when rotating the wheel/rear disc brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Pump the brake pedal several times to check the operation of the brakes before moving vehicle.
  26.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper adapter
  6.  
  7. Remove the rotor set screw and remove the brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front park brake cable from the equalizer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the return springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hold down springs.
  14.  
  15. Remove the adjuster spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjuster.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear park brake shoes.

To install:

  1. Install the park brake shoes.
  2.  
  3. Install the hold down springs.
  4.  
  5. Install the return spring.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjuster.
  8.  
  9. Install the adjuster spring.
  10.  
  11. Install the park brake cable to the equalizer.
  12.  
  13. Install the disc brake rotor and install the set screw.
  14.  
  15. Install the caliper adapter.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheel.
  18.  
  19. Turn the adjusting wheel until it is no longer possible to rotate the rear wheel.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the adjusting wheel 3-4 teeth divisions.
  22.  
  23. Inspect the clearance, or a slight drag when rotating the wheel/rear disc brake rotor.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
