Speed sensor tone wheel on hub assembly-1997
  1. Disconnect the speed sensor harness connector in the engine compartment.
  2.
  3. Remove the bolts holding the sensor harness brackets and clips. Take careful note of placement and location of harness retainers; exact reassembly is required.
  4.
  5. Remove the sensor retaining bolt at the front hub.
  6.
  7. Remove the front wheel speed sensor by lifting it straight out of the housing. Do not damage the tip of the sensor by hitting it against surrounding components. Protect the tip from damage after it is removed. Inspect the sensor tip for any damage or accumulated debris. Clean or replace as necessary.
  8.

To install:

  1. Place the sensor into the mount without damaging or striking the tip.
  2.
  3. Install the retaining bolt and tighten it to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  4.
  5. Remove the caliper and brake disc. Use a non-ferrous feeler gauge to check the clearance between the tip of the sensor and the tone wheel. Rotate the hub and check sensor-to-tone wheel clearance to the tone wheel at several locations. Standard clearance is 0.039-0.059 in. (1.0-1.5mm).
  6.
  7. If the air gap to the tone wheel is too small, the sensor may be raised using special ABS sensor shims. Remove the sensor, install the shim and recheck. If clearance is too great, there is a problem with the tone wheel, the hub and/or the sensor.
  8.
  9. Once the air gap is correct, reset the retaining bolt to the correct torque.
  10.
  11. Working from the sensor end, install each harness clip and retainer, making sure the cable is routed exactly as before. Do not allow the cable to become twisted or kinked.
  12.
  13. Connect the sensor to the ABS harness in the engine compartment.
  14.

  1. Disconnect front ABS sensor connector located in engine compartment.
  2.
  3. Remove bolts which secure sensor harness to strut.
  4.
  5. Remove bolts which secure sensor harness to body.
  6.
  7. Remove bolts which secure front ABS sensor to housing, and remove front ABS sensor.
    CAUTION
Be careful not to damage pole piece located at tip of the sensor and teeth faces during removal.

    CAUTION
Do not pull sensor harness during removal.

  8.
  9. Installation is the reverse order of assembly.
  10.
  11. Place a thickness gauge between the ABS sensor-s and tone wheel-s tooth face. Standard clearance should be 0.012-0.031 in. (0.3-0.8 mm). Once clearance is obtained over the entire perimeter, tighten the ABS sensor on housing to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  12.

  1. Remove the rear seat. Disconnect the ABS harness connector.
  2.
  3. Remove the rear sensor harness retaining bracket from the rear trailing link. Remove any other retainers or clips holding the harness. Take note of the cable routing and retainer placement; exact reassembly is required.
  4.
  5. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor to the hub.
  6.
  7. Remove the rear wheel speed sensor by lifting it straight out of the housing.

Standard clearance is 0.031-0.051 in. (0.8-1.3mm).
  6.
  7. If the air gap to the tone wheel is too small, the sensor may be raised using special ABS sensor shims. Remove the sensor, install the shim and recheck. If clearance is too great, there is a problem with the tone wheel, the hub and/or the sensor.
  8.
  9. Once the air gap is correct, again set the retaining bolt to the correct torque.
  10.
  11. Working from the sensor end, install each harness clip and retainer, making sure the cable is routed exactly as before. Do not allow the cable to become twisted or kinked.
  12.
  13. Connect the sensor to the ABS harness under the rear seat. Install the rear seat.
  14.

  1. Remove the rear seat and disconnect the rear ABS sensor electrical connector.
  2.
  3. Remove the rear sensor harness bracket from the rear trailing link and bracket.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear ABS sensor from rear back plate.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse order of assembly.
  8.
  9. Place a thickness gauge between the ABS sensor-s and tone wheel-s tooth face. Standard clearance should be as follows:
    1. 1998-2004 Models: 0.012-0.031 in. (0.3-0.8 mm).
    2.
    3. 2005 Models: 0.028-0.047 in. (0.7-1.2 mm).
    4.

  10.
  11. Once clearance is obtained over the entire perimeter, tighten the ABS sensor on housing to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  12.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the fuel tank under cover.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the rear ABS sensor connector.
  10.
  11. Remove the rear sensor harness from clip on the body side.
  12.
  13. Remove the bolts which hold the rear sensor harness brackets.
  14.
  15. Remove the rear ABS sensor from the rear arm.
  16.
  17. Installation is the reverse order of assembly.
  18.
  19. Place a thickness gauge between the ABS sensor-s and tone wheel-s tooth face. Standard clearance should be as follows:
    1. 1998-2000: 0.012-0.031 in. (0.3-0.8 mm)
