Crankshaft Position Sensor

Operation



The crankshaft position sensor is a variable reluctance sensor which is used to inform the ECM when the No.1 piston is at top dead center. This information is used for controlling and adjusting ignition and fuel injector timing.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt that retains the sensor in place at the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor to 4.7 ft. lbs.
  4.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the collector cover, as required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt that retains the sensor in place at the cylinder block.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor to 4.7 ft. lbs.
  4.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the collector cover, as required.
  4.  
  5. As required, remove the air intake chamber.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt that retains the sensor in place at the cylinder block.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor to 4.7 ft. lbs.
  4.  

Testing



  1. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the two connector terminals of the sensor, (terminals 1 and 2).
  4.  
  5. If measured value is not within 1-4 kohms, replace the sensor.
  6.  

  1. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the two connector terminals of the sensor, (terminals 1 and 2).
  4.  
  5. If measured value is not within 1-4 kohms, replace the sensor.
  6.  

  1. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the two connector terminals of the sensor, (terminals 1 and 2).
  4.  
  5. If measured value is not within 1-4 kohms, replace the sensor.
  6.
