Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve



Operation

The EGR valve controls the flow of exhaust gases. The ECM monitors the flow and regulates the valve accordingly.

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the valve from the intake manifold.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the retaining bolts to 14.0 ft. lbs.
  4.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4.  
  5. On valves equipped with a vacuum hose, disconnect it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Discard the gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use a new gasket.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the retaining bolts to 14.0 ft. lbs.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4.  
  5. On valves equipped with a vacuum hose, disconnect it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Discard the gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  3. Be sure to use a new gasket.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the retaining bolts to 14.0 ft. lbs.
  6.  

Testing
  1. Disconnect the connector from the ECM.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the ECM connector and chassis ground.
    NOTE
    If DTC code P1492 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 18/chassis ground. If DTC code P1494 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 17/chassis ground. If DTC code P1496 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 16/chassis ground. If DTC code P1498 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 15/chassis ground.

  4.  
  5. If measured value is more than 1 Mohm, check the ECM connector and the EGR solenoid for poor contact.
  6.  
  7. If contact is good, replace the EGR solenoid valve.

2.2L Engine
  1. Check and replace vacuum hoses, if they are clogged or brittle.
  2.  
  3. Check the valve for blockage, replace or clean as required.
  4.  

2.5L SOHC Engine
  1. Disconnect the connector from the ECM.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the ECM connector and chassis ground.
  4.  
  5. On 2004 vehicles, if DTC code P1493 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 18/chassis ground. If DTC code P1495 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 17/chassis ground. If DTC code P1497 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 16/chassis ground. If DTC code P1499 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 15/chassis ground.
  6.  
  7. On 2005 vehicles, if DTC code P1492 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 9/connector E18 and terminal 4. If DTC code P1494 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 10/connector E18 and terminal 6. If DTC code P1496 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 11/connector E18 and terminal 3. If DTC code P1498 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 8/connector E18 and terminal 1.
  8.  
  9. If measured value is more than 1 Mohm, check the ECM connector and the EGR solenoid for poor contact.
  10.  
  11. If contact is good, replace the EGR solenoid valve.

  1. Disconnect the connector from the ECM.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the ECM connector and chassis ground.
  4.  
  5. On 2004 vehicles, if DTC code P1492 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 18/chassis ground. If DTC code P1494 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 17/chassis ground. If DTC code P1496 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 16/chassis ground. If DTC code P1498 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 15/chassis ground.
  6.  
  7. On 2005 vehicles, if DTC code P1493 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 9/connector E18 and terminal 4. If DTC code P1495 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 10/connector E18 and terminal 6. If DTC code P1497 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 11/connector E18 and terminal 3. If DTC code P1499 was set, use connector B134 and terminal 8/connector E18 and terminal 1.
  8.  
  9. If measured value is more than 1 Mohm, check the ECM connector and the EGR solenoid for poor contact.
  10.  
  11. If contact is good, replace the EGR solenoid valve.
