Operation



The sensor monitors and signals the ECM of changes in intake manifold pressure which result from engine load, speed and atmospheric pressure changes.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new O-rings.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining screw to 1.2 ft. lbs.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new O-rings.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining screw to 1.2 ft. lbs.
  6.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the collector cover, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the filter assembly from the intake manifold, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new O-rings.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining screw to 1.2 ft. lbs., except 3.0L engine.
  6.  
  7. Torque the retaining bolts to 4.7 ft. lbs. on 3.0L engine.
  8.  

Testing



  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  2.  
  3. Using the Subaru scan tool, operate the LED operation mode.
  4.  
  5. If the idle switch signal comes on and there are no other displayed codes check the condition of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. If the sensor is securely in place on its mounting and the throttle body is secure on its mounting, replace the sensor.
  8.  

2.2L Engine
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  2.  
  3. Using the Subaru scan tool, operate the LED operation mode.
  4.  
  5. If the idle switch signal comes on and there are no other displayed codes check the condition of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. If the sensor is securely in place on its mounting and the throttle body is secure on its mounting, replace the sensor.
  8.  

2.5L DOHC Engine
  1. Measure the resistance of the harness between the sensor and engine ground (connector E21 and terminal 1).
  2.  
  3. If the resistance is more than 1 Mohm, replace the sensor.
  4.  

  1. Measure the resistance of the harness between the sensor and engine ground (connector E21 and terminal 1).
  2.  
  3. If the resistance is more than 1 Mohm, replace the sensor.
  4.  

2.5L SOHC Engine
  1. On 1997-2000 vehicles, measure the resistance of the harness between the sensor and engine ground (connector E21 and terminal 1).
  2.  
  3. On 2001-2002 vehicles, measure the resistance of the harness between the sensor and engine ground (connector E21 and terminal 4).
  4.  
  5. On 2003-2004 vehicles, measure the resistance of the harness between the sensor and engine ground (connector E21 and terminal 2).
  6.  
  7. If the resistance is more than 500 Kohm.
  8.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector from the ECM.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance of the harness between the ECM and the sensor connector (connector B136 terminal 35 and connector E21 terminal 2).
  6.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connectors from the ECM.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance of the harness between the ECM and the sensor (connector B134 terminal 29 and connector E21 terminal1)
  6.  
  7. If the resistance is less than 1 ohm, replace the sensor.
  8.  

Except 2.5L DOHC Engine
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  2.  
  3. Using the Subaru scan tool, operate the LED operation mode.
  4.  
  5. If the idle switch signal comes on and there are no other displayed codes check the condition of the sensor.
  6.  
  7. If the sensor is securely in place on its mounting and the throttle body is secure on its mounting, replace the sensor.
