Electric Fan Switch



Removal & Installation
3.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood stay holder.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring harness from the electric fan switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the electric fan switch.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Testing

The manufacturer does not provide service information related to this topic.

Except on the 3.0L engine, the ECM controls the operation of the radiator main fan and sub fan depending on the signals from the engine coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and A/C switch.

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air intake assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the overflow hose, remove the overflow pipe and reservoir tank.
  12.  
  13. Remove the radiator fan assembly.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and remove the reservoir tank.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two upper fan shroud mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the main fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the fan motor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coolant reservoir tank.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 fan shroud bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fan blade retainer nut, then remove the motor retainer nuts to separate the motor from the shroud.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure the fan motor to the shroud, and tighen the nuts to 2-3 ft. lbs. (3-4 Nm).

    Motor-to-blade-1-2 ft. lbs. (1-3 Nm)
     
    Fan-2-3 ft. lbs. (3-4 Nm)
     
    Coolant reservoir tank-4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm)

  15. Start the engine and check for proper fan operation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower fan shroud mounting bolts, 1998 models only
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two upper fan shroud mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the main fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission cooler hose from the clip of the radiator fan motor assembly, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt covers.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the overflow hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the reservoir tank.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two upper fan shroud mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the main fan assembly.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission cooler hose from the clip of the radiator fan motor assembly, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle
  10.  
  11. Remove the air intake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the overflow hose and reservoir tank.
  14.  
  15. Remove the main fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

2.5L Turbo Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fan electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission cooler hose from the clip of the radiator fan motor assembly, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the overflow hose and reservoir tank.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the main fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

3.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hood stay holder.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the connector from the radiator fan control unit.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine undercover.
  12.  
  13. Drain the engine coolant.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transmission cooler hose from the clip of the radiator fan motor assembly, if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Remove the radiator fan motor harness from the clip.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the reservoir tank.
  22.  
  23. Remove the radiator sub-fan assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator fan assembly.
    NOTE
    When removing the main fan assembly, lifting it straight up will cause the main fan shroud contacts to inlet part of engine coolant. To avoid contacting it, move the main fan assembly to sub fan assembly side before removal.

  27. Installation is the reverse order of assembly. Tighten the fan shroud mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).

  29. Refill the engine cooling system to the correct level.

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the electrical connector from the cooling fan assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper radiator bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two bolts securing the cooling fan frame to the radiator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cooling fan from the frame assembly.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure all components accordingly.

    Cooling fan assembly-to-frame retainer nuts-5-6 ft. lbs. (6-8 Nm)
     
    Cooling fan mounting bolts-5-6 ft. lbs. (6-8 Nm)
     
    Upper radiator bracket retainer bolts-9-17 ft. lbs. (12-22 Nm)

  17. Start the vehicle and check for proper fan operation.
