  1. Check the oil pump case for worn shaft hole, clogged oil passage, worn rotor chamber, cracks, and other faults.
  2.  
  3. Check the oil seal lips for deformation, hardening, wear, etc. and replace if defective.
  4.  
  5. Measure the tip clearance of rotors. If clearance exceeds the standard, replace the rotors as a matched set.
    1. Except 3.0L Engine: 0.0016-0.0055 in. (0.04-0.14 mm)
    2.  
    3. 3.0L Engine: 0.0016-0.0055 in. (0.04-0.14 mm)
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and oil pump rotor housing. If clearance exceeds the standard, replace the rotor.
    1. Except 3.0L Engine: 0.0039-0.0069 in. (0.10-0.18 mm)
    2.  
    3. 3.0L Engine: 0.0043-0.0069 in. (0.11-0.18 mm)
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Measure the clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and pump cover. If clearance exceeds the standard, replace the rotor or pump body.
    1. Except 3.0L Engine: 0.0008-0.0028 in. (0.02-0.07 mm)
    2.  
    3. 3.0L Engine: 0.0008-0.0018 in. (0.02-0.05 mm)
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Check the valve for fitting condition and damage, and the relief valve spring for damage and deterioration. Replace the parts if defective.

1.8L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pump's outer rotor from the cylinder block.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the oil pump.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Wash the disassembled components in solvent.
  2.  
  3. Check the outside diameter of the inner rotor shaft. Shaft diameter should be 1.4035-1.4055 inch (35.65-35.70mm).
  4.  
  5. Check the outside diameter of the outer rotor. Diameter should be 1.9665-1.9685 inch (49.95-50.00mm).
  6.  
  7. Check the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance is greater than 0.0087 inch (0.22mm), replace the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Measure the height of the case projection H1 plus the oil pump inner and outer rotors H2 .
  10.  
  11. Measure the depth of the rotor housing bore L in the cylinder block.
  12.  
  13. Calculate the side clearance C using the following equation: C = L - (H1 + H2). If the side clearance is greater than 0.00071 inch (0.18mm), replace the pump inner and outer rotors with oversized versions.
  14.  

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump and gasket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front seal from the oil pump.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 inch (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 inch (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0047 inch (0.12mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant into a suitable separate container.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Use extreme care not to damage the engine block or the oil pump during removal of the pump.



    Timing belt
     
    Belt tensioner bracket
     
    Engine coolant pipe, if necessary
     
    Left side camshaft sprocket and left side belt cover, if necessary
     
    Water pump
     
    Oil pump mounting bolts
     
    Oil pump by carefully prying it from the engine block
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 in. (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 in. (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0047 in. (0.12mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.  
  7. Install a new front oil seal on the pump cover using a driver.
  8.  
  9. Assemble the oil pump.
  10.  
  11. Apply sealant and a new O-ring to the oil pump.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Water pump
     
    Left side camshaft sprocket and left side belt cover
     
    Engine coolant pipe, if necessary
     
    Belt tensioner bracket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.  

1.8L Engine

The engine oil pump is located at the front of the engine. The oil filter is attached to the oil pump.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Place an oil pan under the crankcase, remove the drain plug and drain the oil from the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right front timing belt covers.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the tensioner mounting bolts on the No. 1 cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Turn the tensioner to fully loosen the belt, then tighten the mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Using a piece of chalk, mark the rotating direction of the timing belt, then remove the belt from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pump-to-engine bolts and the oil pump along with the oil filter from the cylinder block.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pump's outer rotor from the cylinder block.
  18.  
  19. Disassemble the oil pump.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Wash the disassembled components in solvent.
  2.  
  3. Check the outside diameter of the inner rotor shaft. Shaft diameter should be 1.4035-1.4055 inch (35.65-35.70mm).

  5. Check the outside diameter of the outer rotor. Diameter should be 1.9665-1.9685 inch (49.95-50.00mm).

  7. Check the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance is greater than 0.0087 inch (0.22mm), replace the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Measure the height of the case projection H1 plus the oil pump inner and outer rotors H2 .

  11. Measure the depth of the rotor housing bore L in the cylinder block.
  12.  
  13. Calculate the side clearance C using the following equation: C = L - (H1 + H2). If the side clearance is greater than 0.00071 inch (0.18mm), replace the pump inner and outer rotors with oversized versions.

  15. Using new gaskets and O-rings, assemble the oil pump. Tighten the oil pump pulley to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-21 Nm). Tighten the by-pass spring plug to 23-27 ft. lbs. (31-37 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pump on the cylinder block.
  18.  
  19. Install the timing belt and related components.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for adequate oil pressure. Check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. Adjust the ignition timing as required.
  24.  

2.2L And 2.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant into a suitable separate container.

    Radiator main fan and sub fan assemblies, on Impreza models
     
    Radiator, on Legacy models
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
     
    Drive belts
     
    Rear side V-belt tensioner
     
    Crankshaft pulley using a suitable tool
     
    Water pump
     
    Timing belt guide, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Oil pump mounting bolts
     
    Oil pump by carefully prying it from the engine block

WARNING
Use extreme care not to damage the engine block or the oil pump during removal of the pump.

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 in. (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 in. (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0059 in. (0.15mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.  
  7. Assemble the oil pump.
  8.  
  9. Apply sealant and a new O-ring to the oil pump.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt guide, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Water pump
     
    Crankshaft pulley using a suitable tool
     
    Rear side V-belt tensioner
     
    Drive belts
     
    CKP and CMP sensors
     
    Radiator, on Legacy models
     
    Radiator main fan and sub fan assemblies, on Impreza models
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant into a suitable separate container.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Belt tensioner bracket
     
    Engine coolant pipe, if necessary
     
    Left side camshaft sprocket and left side belt cover, if necessary
     
    Water pump

    Oil pump by carefully prying it from the engine block
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 in. (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 in. (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0047 in. (0.12mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.  
  7. Install a new front oil seal on the pump cover using a driver.
  8.  
  9. Assemble the oil pump.
  10.  
  11. Apply sealant and a new O-ring to the oil pump.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Water pump
     
    Left side camshaft sprocket and left side belt cover
     
    Engine coolant pipe, if necessary
     
    Belt tensioner bracket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 in. (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 in. (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0059 in. (0.15mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.  
  7. Assemble the oil pump.
  8.  
  9. Apply sealant and a new O-ring to the oil pump.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt guide, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Water pump
     
    Crankshaft pulley using a suitable tool
     
    Rear side V-belt tensioner
     
    Drive belts
     
    CKP and CMP sensors
     
    Radiator, on Legacy models
     
    Radiator main fan and sub fan assemblies, on Impreza models
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Drain the engine oil into a separate container.
  10.  
  11. Remove the belt covers, timing belt and related parts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the belt tensioner bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine coolant pipe.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and pry the pump from the engine block.
    NOTE
    Use extreme care not to damage the engine block or the oil pump during removal of the pump.

  20.  

To install:

  1. Install a new front seal to the oil pump. Apply a continuous bead sealant to the mating surfaces of the oil pump. Install a new O-ring to the oil pump. Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts to 56 inch lbs. (6.4 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install all remaining components.
  4.  
  5. Fill the engine to the proper level with the recommended oil and coolant.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     

  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant into a suitable separate container.
    WARNING
    Use extreme care not to damage the engine block or the oil pump during removal of the pump.



    Radiator main fan and sub fan assemblies, on Impreza
     
    Radiator, on Legacy
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
     
    Drive belts
     
    Rear side V-belt tensioner
     
    Crankshaft pulley using a suitable tool
     
    Water pump
     
    Timing belt guide, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Oil pump mounting bolts
     
    Oil pump by carefully prying it from the engine block
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 in. (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 in. (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0059 in. (0.15mm), replace the rotor or pump body.
  6.  
  7. Assemble the oil pump.
  8.  
  9. Apply sealant and a new O-ring to the oil pump.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt guide, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Water pump
     
    Crankshaft pulley using a suitable tool
     
    Rear side V-belt tensioner
     
    Drive belts
     
    CKP and CMP sensors
     
    Radiator, on Legacy
     
    Radiator main fan and sub fan assemblies, on Impreza
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. On the DOHC engine, remove the collector cover.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the under cover.
  8.  
  9. On the DOHC engine, remove the bolts which retain the water pipe of the oil cooler to the oil pump. Remove the water pipe and hoses between the oil cooler and the water pump.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle. Remove the radiator.
  12.  
  13. To remove the front side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the front side belt.
  14.  
  15. To remove the rear side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the rear side belt.
  16.  
  17. On the SOHC engine remove the belt tensioner.
  18.  
  19. On the DOHC engine remove the rear side V belt tensioner
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  22.  
  23. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  24.  
  25. Lock the crankshaft in place using tool ST499977100 for the SOHC engine and tool ST499207400 for the DOHC engine, or equivalent.
  26.  
  27. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  28.  
  29. Remove the water pump.
  30.  
  31. If equipped, remove the timing belt guide. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  32.  
  33. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts.
    NOTE
    When disassembling and checking the oil pump, loosen the relief valve plug before removing the oil pump from its mounting.

  34.  
  35. Using a flat tip tool remove the oil pump from the engine.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Be sure all mating surfaces are clean and free of dirt.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket part number 004403007, or equivalent to the mating surfaces of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to replace the O-ring with a new one.
  6.  
  7. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the inside of the oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Position the oil pump to its mounting, aligning the notched area with the crankshaft and push the pump straight.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the oil seal lip is not folded.

  10.  
  11. Install the oil pump. Apply liquid gasket part number 004403042, or equivalent to the three retaining bolt threads. Install the bolts and tighten to 4.7 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Be sure to fill the cooling system with the proper grade and type coolant.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct, as required.
  18.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant.

    Radiator
     
    Drive belt
     
    Front timing chain cover and chain. Refer to the timing chain removal procedure in this section.
     
    Oil pump cover and crankshaft sprocket
     
    Inner and outer rotor
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to the entire surface area of the inner and outer rotor
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Inner rotor by fitting it into the groove on the crankshaft and then assemble the outer rotor
     
    Oil pump cover and tighten the bolts in the sequence illustrated to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm)

  4.  
  5. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     

  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant.

    Radiator
     
    Drive belt
     
    Front timing chain cover and chain. Refer to the timing chain removal procedure in this section.
     
    Oil pump cover and crankshaft sprocket
     
    Inner and outer rotor
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to the entire surface area of the inner and outer rotor
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Inner rotor by fitting it into the groove on the crankshaft and then assemble the outer rotor
     
    Oil pump cover and tighten the bolts in the sequence illustrated to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm)

  5. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the collector cover.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the under cover.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle. Remove the radiator.
  10.  
  11. To remove the front side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the front side belt.
  12.  
  13. To remove the rear side V belt, remove the belt covers. Loosen the lock bolt. Loosen the slider bolt. Remove the rear side belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft pulley cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  18.  
  19. Lock the crankshaft in place using tool ST499977100, or equivalent.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front timing chain cover.
    NOTE
    Bolts are three different sizes. Be careful to install the correct bolt in the correct hole.

  24.  
  25. Remove the timing chain.
  26.  
  27. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil pump cover retaining bolts. Remove the oil pump cover.
  30.  
  31. Remove the inner and outer rotors.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Be sure all mating surfaces are clean and free of dirt.
  2.  
  3. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the complete area of the inner and outer rotors.
  4.  
  5. Position the inner rotor in place. Position the outer rotor in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the pump cover. Tighten the retaining bolts to 4.7 ft. lbs. and in the proper sequence.
    NOTE
    Make sure that the bolts are installed in the correct positions.

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Be sure to fill the cooling system with the proper grade and type coolant.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct, as required.
  14.  

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine under covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts securing the power steering oil cooler pipe. DO NOT remove the pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cooling fan assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belt cover and drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crank angle sensors.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  20.  
  21. Remove the timing belt, tensioners and tensioner brackets.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Separate the oil pump from the block by inserting a suitable prying tool between the pump and the block.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil pump and gasket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front seal from the oil pump.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Measure the tip clearance of the rotors. If clearance is greater than 0.0071 inch (0.18mm), replace the rotors.
  2.  
  3. Measure the clearance between the outer rotor and the cylinder block rotor housing. If clearance exceeds 0.0079 inch (0.20mm), replace the rotor.
  4.  
  5. Measure the side clearance between the oil pump inner rotor and the pump cover. If clearance exceeds 0.0047 inch (0.12mm), replace the rotor or pump body.

  7. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump.
  8.  
  9. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pump using a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install all remaining components and tighten to specifications.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Refill the crankcase with oil.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Start the vehicle and verify no oil leaks.
