Removal & Installation



3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley bolt using tool 499977100 to hold the crankshaft
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  4.  


NOTE
There are 4 different types of front cover bolts. Note their sizes and keep them separate to avoid a problem during installation.

To install:

  1. Make sure all components are clean. Apply oil to the chain guide, tensioner lever and idler sprockets.
  2.  
  3. Place the screw, spring, pin and tension rod into the tensioner body.
  4.  
  5. While pressing the tensioner onto a rubber mat, twist it to the left and right to shorten the rod. Place a thin pin into the holes between the rod and body to hold it in place. Always perform this task on a rubber mat.
  6.  
  7. Using the crankshaft socket tool, align theTOP MARK
  8.  
  9. Using camshaft sprocket wrench ST 18231AA000, align the four key grooves on the camshaft sprockets to the 12 O-clock position as illustrated.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket clockwise to align theTOP MARK
  12.

CAUTION
Do not rotate the camshaft or crankshaft sprockets until the chain is completely routed or damage will occur.

  1. Install the lower idler sprocket and tighten the bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the left hand timing chain, align the markBA
  4.  
  5. Route the left hand timing chain onto the lower idler sprocket, water pump, exhaust cam sprocket and the intake cam sprocket in that order.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the markAB
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Upper chain idler and tighten the bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    Chain guide on the left hand side between the cams and tighten the bolt to 4.6 ft. lbs. (6 Nm) using a NEW bolt
     
    Chain guide on the left hand side and tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Tensioner lever on the left hand side and tighten the bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Chain tensioner on the left hand side and tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Right hand timing chain. On the lower idler sprocket align the match marks on the timing chain on the left and right hand sides as illustrated. Route the chain onto the intake cam sprocket and the exhaust cam sprocket.

  11. Make sure the markAB
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Right hand chain guide
     
    Right hand chain tensioner lever and tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    Right hand chain guide and tighten the NEW bolt to 4.6 ft. lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Right hand chain tensioner and tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)

  15. Adjust the clearance between the chain guide on the right hand side and the center chain guide so that there is range between 0.331-0.339 inch (8.4-8.6mm).

    Center chain guide and tighten the NEW bolt to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm)

  17. Check the match marks on each sprocket and corresponding timing chain are correct, remove the stopper from the tensioner.
  18.  
  19. Clean the mating surfaces on the front timing cover. Apply a 0.078-0.126 inch (2-5mm) bead of gasket maker to the mating surface of the front cover. Subaru recommends Three Bond 1280B for this procedure.
  20.  
  21. Install the front chain cover and temporarily tighten the bolts. use the illustration showing the bolt sizes and location for proper installation.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the front timing cover bolts in the sequence illustrated to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley, apply clean oil to the bolt threads and tighten the bolt to 131 ft. lbs. (178 Nm)
     
    Camshaft pulley cover and tighten the bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  26.  
  27. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks.
