Removal & Installation



1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the breather hose attached to the valve cover, if equipped. Depending on which valve cover is being removed, there may not be an attached hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retainer bolts from the rocker cover(s). Depending on engine, there may be as few as two bolts or as many as eight.
  8.  
  9. If needed, using a rubber hammer, tap the rocker covers to break the seal between the gasket and the valve cover.
    WARNING
    Do not tap the rocker cover too hard, or the cover may be damaged or distorted.

  11. Remove the rocker cover from the cylinder head.
  12.  
  13. Remove the old gasket from the rocker cover. Clean the surface of the cylinder head and the rocker cover.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Spread a thin layer of Permatex® or equivalent adhesive on the mating surface of the rocker cover to hold the gasket in place during installation. Install a new gasket, and press lightly to seat.
  2.  
  3. Position the rocker cover on the cylinder head and install the retainer bolts. Tighten the bolts to 3-4 ft. lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the breather hose to the valve cover, if removed.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

2.0L & 2.5L Engines
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, the positive battery cable, and remove battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the windshield washer tank mounting bolts and washer motor electrical connectors. Move the washer tank forward, keeping the washer hoses connected, and secure the tank with mechanics wire.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the spark plug cables from the Nos. 2 and 4 cylinders.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the PCV hose from the valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left side valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Remove the engine undercover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side timing belt front cover. Refer to -Timing Belt and Sprockets, Removal & Installation- procedure in this section to remove the timing belt front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the spark plug cables from the Nos. 1 and 3 cylinders.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the PCV hose from the valve cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right side valve cover.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

2.2L Engine

Refer to -Rocker Arms/Shafts, Removal & Installation- procedure in this section to remove the valve covers.

3.0L Engine
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, the positive battery cable, and remove battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the windshield washer tank mounting bolts and washer motor electrical connectors. Move the washer tank upward, keeping the washer hoses connected, and secure the tank with mechanics wire.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the PCV and blow-by hose from the left side valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left side fuel hose cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the front oxygen sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coils.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left side valve cover.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  18.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering hose from the mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts. Remove the power steering pump reservoir from the bracket by pulling it upward. Place the power steering pump on the right side fender, using an apron to protect the fender.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right side fuel hose cover.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the front oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Remove the right side valve cover.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  26.  

3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
