Diagnosis & Testing
Legacy
  1. Apply battery voltage between the 1-pin connector and body ground wire.
  2.  
  3. Make sure that sunroof motor moves when connecting terminals as follows:
    1. Connect between terminals No. 3 and 4 (OPEN)
    2.  
    3. Connect between terminals No. 6 and 4 (CLOSE)
    4.  
    5. Connect between terminals No. 5 and 4 (TILT UP)
    6.  
    7. Connect between terminals No. 2 and 4 (TILT DOWN)

Outback
  1. Apply battery voltage between terminal No. 1 and the body ground wire.

  1. Remove the roof trim, rear quarter trim and pillar trim.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the motor assembly.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2004-05 Models
  1. Completely close the glass and open the sunshade.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front cover and remove the mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Carefully remove the glass.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Confirm the alignment mark of the sunroof bracket link and the guide from the sunroof opening.
  10.  
  11. Remove the headliner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the motor cover.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  16.  
  17. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the motor assembly.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

  1. Remove the upper center pillar trim.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper front pillar trim.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side assist grip.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sunvisor and hook.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sunroof switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rearview mirror.
  12.  
  13. While rolling up the headliner, disconnect the wiring harness clips and connectors.
  14.  
  15. Remove the center lamp bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the mounting bolts and sunroof motor assembly.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2000-04 Sedan And 2003-05 Baja
  1. Remove sunroof glass as follows:
    1. Tilt up the sunroof to the upper most position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the sunroof switch.
    4.  
    5. Remove the two mounting bolts.
    6.  
    7. Detach the covers, then remove the two nuts from the tilt-up assembly.
    8.

  3. Slide out the glass carefully.
  4.  
  5. Completely close the sunroof.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect ground cable from battery.
  8.  
  9. Confirm the matching mark (A) of sunroof bracket link and the guide from sunroof opening. (If the mark does not match, adjust to match the mark.)
  10.  
  11. Remove the headliner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the motor cover.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wiring harness connector and remove the sunroof motor mounting bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the sunroof motor assembly.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse order of assembly.

2000-05 Wagon
  1. Completely close the front and rear sunroof, then tilt-up the front sunroof to the most upper position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect ground cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove rear sunroof lid.
  6.  
  7. Confirm the matching mark (A) of rear sunroof bracket link and the guide from sunroof opening. (If the mark does not match, adjust to match the mark.)

  8.  
  9. Remove the luggage room light.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear assist grips.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear window molding of both sides.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screws and clips of rear quarter lower trim shown in the illustration.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear quarter upper trim of both sides.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear rail trim.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cover while detaching snap lock carefully. Put the rear center seat belt tongue out to the other side of the trim through the hole.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clips and hang down rear end of roof trim.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the harness connector and remove sunroof motor mounting screw.
  26.  
  27. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2005 Sedan
  1. Completely close the sunroof.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the map light.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
    CAUTION
    When installing the sunroof motor assembly, take care not to move the sunroof cable.

Switch
  1. Pry the map light lens off using a screwdriver.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws which secure map light body.
  4.  
  5. Remove the map light body while disconnecting the connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw which secures sunroof switch, and then remove the sunroof switch.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
