WARNING
Before beginning the procedure, determine whether your vehicle is equipped with a front parking brake assembly. If equipped with front parking brakes, only compress the piston slightly, or the piston screw could be damaged.

  1. Remove a small portion of brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands. Remove the wheel assemblies.
  4.
  5. Use a C-clamp to compress the piston into the caliper bore.
    NOTE
If your vehicle is equipped with front parking brakes, compress the piston only slightly.

  6.
  7. Release the parking brake and disconnect the cable from the caliper lever, if equipped.
  8.
  9. Remove the lock pin bolts from the lower portion of the caliper.
  10.
  11. Swing the caliper upward to access the pads.
  12.
  13. Remove the disc brake pads, noting the position of the backing plates and retainer clips.
    NOTE
If equipped with a parking brake, use a suitable tool to rotate the piston back into the caliper bore.

  14.

To install:

  1. Inspect the brake rotor, calipers and retaining components. Correct worn or damaged parts as necessary.
  2.
  3. Install the new pads into the calipers, being sure all shims and clips are in their original positions.
  4.
  5. Swing the calipers down into position and install the lock pin bolts. Tighten the lock pin bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Legacy and Impreza-25-33 ft. lbs. (34-44 Nm)
    2.
    3. SVX-25-33 ft. lbs. (34-44 Nm)
    4.

  6.
  7. Reconnect the parking brake cable, if equipped, and fill the master cylinder reservoir.
  8.
  9. Install the wheel assembly. Bleed the brakes as required and lower the vehicle. Road test the vehicle.
  10.

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.
  9. On 15 inch type, remove the lower caliper bolt. Raise the caliper body upward and support it. Do not disconnect the fluid line.
  10.
  11. On 16 inch type, remove the -M- clip. Remove the pad pins and cross spring. Expand the pads and then push the piston back.
  12.
  13. On 17 inch type, remove the clip. Remove the pad pins and cross spring. Expand the pads and then push the piston back.
  14.
  15. Remove the disc brake pads.
  16.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.
  3. On 15 inch wheel, apply a thin coat of Molykote AS-880N (part number K0779YA010) or equivalent to the frictional portion between the pad and pad clip, and the pad and pad inner shim.
  4.
  5. On 16 inch type, apply a thin coat of Molykote AS-880N (part number K0779YA010) or equivalent to the frictional portion between the pad and pad inner shim.
  6.
  7. On 17 inch type, apply a thin coat of Molykote AS-880N (part number K0779YA010) or equivalent to the frictional portion between the pad and pad shim.
  8.
  9. Check the brake fluid level, correct as required.
  10.
  11. Bleed the hydraulic system, as required.
  12.

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
