Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sway bar link-to-lower control arm mounting nuts and bolts.
  8.  
  9. On the Legacy and Impreza, remove the jack-up plate from the lower crossmember.
  10.  
  11. On models with ABS, disconnect the sensor wiring and remove the retaining bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the sway bar bracket-to-frame bolts and remove the sway bar from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure all components to specifications.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the jack up plate from the lower part of the crossmember.
  4.  
  5. On Outback Sport, remove the sub frame.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt and nut which secures the stabilizer to the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts which secure the stabilizer link to the front transverse link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the rubber bushing, on the front crossmember side, while aligning it with the paint mark on the stabilizer bar.
  4.  
  5. Be sure that the bushings and the stabilizer have the same identification colors.
  6.  
  7. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the jack up plate from the lower part of the crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sub frame.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut which secures the stabilizer link to the front transverse link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts that secure the stabilizer bar to the crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the rubber bushing, on the front crossmember side, while aligning it with the paint mark on the stabilizer bar.
  4.  
  5. Be sure that the bushings and the stabilizer have the same identification colors.
  6.  
  7. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine under cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front crossmember support plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar bracket bolts and bushings.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new self locking nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Install the rubber bushing, on the front crossmember side, while aligning it with the paint mark on the stabilizer bar.
  6.  
  7. Be sure that the bushings and the stabilizer have the same identification colors.
  8.  
  9. The stabilizer bracket has a set orientation. Install it with the arrow mark facing the upper side of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  12.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the jack up plate from the lower part of the crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nut which secures the stabilizer link to the front transverse link.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts that secure the stabilizer bar to the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the rubber bushing, on the front crossmember side, while aligning it with the paint mark on the stabilizer bar.
  4.  
  5. Be sure that the bushings and the stabilizer have the same identification colors.
  6.  
  7. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
