  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Axle nut, unstake the nut before attempting removal
     
    Stabilizer link from the transverse link
     
    Transverse link arm from the knuckle
     
    Halfshaft-to-transaxle roll/spring pin and discard it
     
    Sway bar bracket

    Halfshaft from the transaxle
     
    Halfshaft from the hub using puller 92707000
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the hub
     

  2.  
  3. Using installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft through the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Temporarily tighten a new axle nut
     
    Align the halfshaft roll/spring pin hole
     
    Halfshaft onto the transaxle
     
    New pin.
     
    Transverse link to the knuckle and tighten a new self-locking nut to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm)
     
    Sway bar bracket
     
    New axle nut to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels and tires.
  4.  
  5. Raise the caulking portion of the axle nut. Depress the brake pedal and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer link from the transverse link. Disconnect the transverse link from the housing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front halfshaft assembly.
    NOTE
    Use axle shaft puller tools ST92647000 and ST28099PA110, or equivalent, if it is difficult to remove the halfshaft.

  10.  
  11. Remove the front halfshaft from the transmission, using a pry bar. Be careful not to damage the holder portion.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to replace the differential side seal with a new one.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to use new locknuts.
  6.  
  7. Always tighten the axle shaft nut before installing the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the nut to 162 ft. lbs.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels and tires.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with manual transmission, drain the gear oil.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with automatic transmission, drain the differential gear oil.
  8.  
  9. Raise the caulking portion of the axle nut. Depress the brake pedal and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer link from the front arm. Disconnect the front ball arm from the housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front halfshaft assembly.
    NOTE
    Use axle shaft puller tools ST92647000 and ST28099PA110, or equivalent, if it is difficult to remove the halfshaft.

  14.  
  15. Remove the front halfshaft from the transmission, using a pry bar. Be careful not to damage the holder portion.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels and tires.

  7. Raise the caulking portion of the axle nut. Depress the brake pedal and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE

  9. Remove the stabilizer link from the transverse arm. Disconnect the transverse arm from the housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spring pin which secures the transmission spindle to the inner joint.
    NOTE
    Be sure to replace the spring pin with a new one, on installation.

  12.  
  13. Remove the front halfshaft assembly.
    NOTE
    Use axle shaft puller tools ST92647000 and ST28099PA110, or equivalent, if it is difficult to remove the halfshaft.

  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new locknuts.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to replace the inner seal with a new one.
  6.  
  7. Be sure to replace the spring pin with a new one.
  8.  
  9. Always tighten the axle shaft nut before installing the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the nut to 162 ft. lbs.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels and tires.
  6.  
  7. Raise the caulking portion of the axle nut. Depress the brake pedal and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  9. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut. Remove the tie rod end, using a puller tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS sensor bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front stabilizer link for the transverse link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt retaining the ball joint, and then remove the transverse link form the housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front halfshaft assembly from the front axle. If it is hard to remove, remove the brake disk rotor.
    NOTE
    Use axle shaft puller tools ST92647000 and ST28099PA110, or equivalent, if it is difficult to remove the halfshaft. Do not hammer the halfshaft to remove it. Be careful not to damage the oil seal or wheel tone.

  19. Remove the front halfshaft from the transmission, using a pry bar. Be careful not to damage the holder portion.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new locknuts.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to replace the inner seal with a new one.
  6.  
  7. Be sure to replace the spring pin with a new one.
  8.  
  9. Always tighten the axle shaft nut before installing the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the nut to 162 ft. lbs.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Axle nut, unstake the nut before attempting removal
     
    Stabilizer link from the transverse link
     
    Transverse link ball joint from the housing
     
    Halfshaft-to-transaxle roll/spring pin and discard it
     
    Sway bar bracket

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the hub
     

  2.  
  3. Using installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft through the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Temporarily tighten a new axle nut
     
    Align the halfshaft roll/spring pin hole
     
    Halfshaft onto the transaxle
     
    New pin.
     
    Transverse link to the knuckle and tighten a new self-locking nut to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Sway bar bracket
     
    New axle nut to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm) on all models except WRX and models equipped with the 3.0L engines. On WRX models, tighten the nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm). On models equipped with the 3.0L engines, tighten the nut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm). Stake the nut
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
