Removal & Installation



1997 Models

The ignition switch is mounted in place using special shear bolts. Removal of the ignition switch requires replacement of these bolts. When removing the bolts it is easiest if you use a suitable punch and hammer to tap the bolts around. When installing new bolts tighten the bolts until the shear heads break off.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. On some models the steering wheel may need to be removed.
  4.  
  5. Some models the hazard warning knob may need removal.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition switch harness from the body harness.
  8.  
  9. Using a drift and hammer, hit the heads of the shear bolts to loosen and remove the ignition switch mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the ignition switch with new mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts until the bolt heads snap off. Install all remaining components and secure.

1998-2001 Models
  1. Remove screws, separate upper column cover and lower column cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove knee protector.
  4.  
  5. Remove meter visor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition switch connectors from the body wiring harness.
  8.  
  9. Using a drift and hammer, hit the torn bolt head to loosen and remove the ignition switch.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2002-05 Models
  1. Remove the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Mount the steering column securely in a vise. Remove the mounting bolt with a drill.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition switch connectors from the body wiring harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition switch assembly.

  9. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Use a new torn bolt and tighten to the end of the thread.
