1997

CAUTION
Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury.


NOTE
While the instrument panel removal procedures here are specific for each vehicle, they should be used only as an outline. Manufacturers production changes and year-to-year trim level changes are not covered in these procedures.

WARNING
When removing the instrument panel on air bag equipped models, use care to avoid damaging the air bag system wiring harness, which is routed near the combination meter. All air bag wiring and connectors are colored yellow.


CAUTION
Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury.

  1. Properly disarm the air bag systems and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear console box.
  4.  
  5. Pull the cup holder.
  6.  
  7. Turn over the shift lever boot (manual transaxle models) or remove select lever cover (automatic transaxle models).
  8.  
  9. Remove the console cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the audio assembly and disconnect the antenna cable and connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower cover and then disconnect the seat belt timer connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the glove box.
  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument panel console.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two bolts and lower the steering column.
  20.  
  21. Remove the column cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hood opening lever.
  24.  
  25. Set the temperature control switch to MAX. COLD, and mode selector switch to the defroster position.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect both the temperature control cable and the mode selector cable from the link.
    NOTE
    Do not move the switch and link when installing.

  28.  
  29. Tag or match mark the wiring connectors, then disconnect by holding the connectors and not the wiring.
  30.  
  31. Remove the six instrument panel retaining bolts and nuts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front defroster grille and two bolts.
  34.  
  35. Carefully remove the instrument panel from the body and then disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the combination meter.
  36.  
  37. With the help of an assistant, install the panel into position in the vehicle. Align the three pins at the top of the panel, with the grommets in the firewall and push the panel into position.
    NOTE
    Be sure that no wires are caught between the panel and its mounting.

  38.  
  39. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each component to specifications.

  1. Properly disarm the air bag system. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center console retaining screws and remove the center console assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolt covers by prying them from the panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower part of the front A pillar trim. Remove the instrument panel under covers from the drivers and passenger's sides.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hood release cable from the hood release lever.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors under the instrument panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster assembly. Remove the glove box assembly
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the ventilation control cables and electrical connectors at the heater unit. Disconnect the vacuum line at the blower housing.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the radio antenna feeder wire. Disconnect the main harness connector at the fuse box.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower steering column covers. Remove the steering column retaining bolts and allow the column to hang down.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolts.
    NOTE
    When removing the instrument panel, check that all wiring and cables are disconnected before pulling it completely away from the firewall.

  22.  
  23. With the help of an assistant, lift and remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure all components. Connect the negative battery cable and check the operation of all electrical accessories.
    NOTE
    When checking electrical components, if any of the fuses should blow, check that there are no wires pinched by the instrument panel and correct it if there are.

CAUTION

  1. Properly disarm the air bag system. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center console assembly retaining screws and remove the center console.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front A pillar upper trim pieces.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio grounding wire, which is screwed to the floor just behind the shifter assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power mirror switch and remove the bolt located behind it.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower driver's side instrument panel cover by removing the 6 clips and disconnecting the 3 connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster lower cover by removing the retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the air bag assembly connector (YELLOW coated wires) at the bottom of the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower steering column cover. Remove the steering column-to-bracket bolts and lower the column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the small bolt caps from both ends of the instrument panel and remove the bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 sets of instrument panel switches by pulling them from their mountings. Disconnect the electrical leads from the switches.
  22.  
  23. Remove the instrument cluster visor assembly and remove the instrument cluster.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 4 bolts from behind where the instrument cluster was. Remove the 5 bolts from inside the glove box.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the main harness connectors under the driver's side (6 connectors). Disconnect the 2 radio antenna leads.
    NOTE
    When removing the instrument panel, check that all wiring and cables are disconnected before pulling it completely away from the firewall.

  28.  
  29. With the help of an assistant, remove the instrument panel by pulling it sharply forward, this will release the retaining pins from the top of the panel. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. With the help of an assistant, install the panel into position in the vehicle. Align the pins at the top of the panel, with the grommets in the firewall and push the panel into position. Install the 4 screws in the instrument cluster opening and the 5 screws in the glove box opening.
    NOTE
    Be sure that no wires are caught between the panel and its mounting. Make sure that the panel is on top of the weatherstrip along the windshield and the strip is not folded along the windshield.

  33. Connect the main wiring harness connectors. Connect the antenna leads. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each component to specifications.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable and check the operation of all electrical accessories.
    NOTE
    When checking electrical components, if any of the fuses should blow, check that there are no wires pinched by the instrument panel and correct it if there are.

2000-04 Legacy
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    If equipped with an air bag system, wait 10 minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable before performing any further work while the system fully de-energizes in order to avoid accidental deployment. All air bag system wiring is yellow. Do not use electrically powered test equipment on these circuits.

  5. Remove the center console retaining screws and remove the center console assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolt covers by prying them from the panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower part of the front A pillar trim. Remove the instrument panel under covers from the driver-s and passenger's sides.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hood release cable from the hood release lever.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors under the instrument panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the instrument cluster assembly. Remove the glove box assembly
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the ventilation control cables and electrical connectors at the heater unit. Disconnect the vacuum line at the blower housing.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the radio antenna feeder wire. Disconnect the main harness connector at the fuse box.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower steering column covers. Remove the steering column retaining bolts and allow the column to hang down.
  22.  
  23. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolts.
    NOTE
    When removing the instrument panel, check that all wiring and cables are disconnected before pulling it completely away from the firewall.

  25. With the help of an assistant, lift and remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

2000-04 Outback
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    If equipped with an air bag system, wait 10 minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable before performing any further work while the system fully de-energizes in order to avoid accidental deployment. All air bag system wiring is yellow. Do not use electrically powered test equipment on these circuits.

  2.  
  3. Remove the lower cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower column cover and disconnect the harness.
  6.  
  7. Set the tires in the straight ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Using a T30 Torx® bit, remove the Torx bolts from either side of the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Slide the airbag module forward and disconnect the electrical connection. Remove the module and store in a safe area.
    NOTE
    Matchmark the steering wheel to shaft location, prior to removal.

  12.  
  13. Steering wheel nut and use a puller to draw the wheel off of the shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the universal joint bolts and remove the joint.
  16.  
  17. If not already removed, remove the trim from under the instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower steering column cover screw.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect all electrical connectors from the column.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 2 bolts that secure the column to the instrument panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column.
  26.  
  27. Remove the glove box stopper and the glove box.
  28.  
  29. Remove the side panels from both sides.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect passenger air bag module from the support beam.
  32.  
  33. Remove the 3 bolts securing the passenger air bag module and remove the module.
  34.  
  35. Remove the shift knob.
  36.  
  37. Remove the tray the console box cover and the console box.
  38.  
  39. Remove the front trim pillar from both sides.
  40.  
  41. Remove the front pillar lower trim from the passenger side.
  42.  
  43. Set the temperature control switch to FULL HOT and disconnect the control cable from the bottom of the heater unit. Do not move the switch and link.
  44.  
  45. Remove the instrument panel bolts, harness connectors and the panel.
  46.  

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel, tighten the bolts and connect the harness connectors
  2.  
  3. Connect the control cable to the bottom of the heater unit. Do not move the switch and link during installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the front pillar lower trim to the passenger side.
  6.  
  7. Install the front trim pillar on both sides.
  8.  
  9. Install the console box, box cover and tray.
  10.  
  11. Install the shift knob.
  12.  
  13. Passenger side airbag module and tighten the 3 bolts securing the module.
  14.  
  15. Connect passenger air bag module to the support beam.
  16.  
  17. Install the side panels on both sides.
  18.  
  19. Install the glove box and stopper.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering column.
  22.  
  23. Install the 2 bolts that secure the column to the instrument panel. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect all electrical connectors to the column.
  26.  
  27. Install the lower steering column cover with the tilt lever held in the lowered position.
  28.  
  29. Install the universal joint. Align the bolt hole on the long yoke side of the joint with the cutout at the serrated section of the shaft end and insert the joint. Align the bolt hole on the short yoke side of the joint at the serrated section of the gearbox assembly and lower the joint completely. Temporarily tighten the bolt on the short yoke side and raise the joint to ensure the bolt is passing properly through the cutout. Tighten the bolt on the long yoke side, then the short yoke side to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Make sure the joint bolt is tightened through the notch in the shaft serration. Do not over tighten the joint bolts as this can lead to heavy steering wheel operation. Make sure the clearance between the gearbox is over 0.59 inch (15mm).

  31. Making sure the wheels are still in the straight ahead position, turn the roll connector (A) clockwise until it stops. Then turn the roll connector pin (A) counterclockwise approximately 2.65 turns until the marks are aligned. Refer to the accompanying illustration for more detail.

  33. Steering wheel, align the matchmarks made during removal and install the nut. Tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). make sure the column cover-to- steering wheel clearance is 0.08-0.16 inch (2-4mm).

  35. Install the drivers side airbag, engage the connector and tighten the fasteners.
    CAUTION
    Insert the roll connector guide pin into the guide hole on the lower end of the surface of the steering wheel to prevent any damage. Draw out the airbag, horn and cruise control connectors from the guide hole of the steering wheel lower end.

  37. Connect any remaining connections and install the lower column cover.
  38.  
  39. Install the lower cover.
  40.  

2002-04 WRX
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    If equipped with an air bag system, wait 10 minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable before performing any further work while the system fully de-energizes in order to avoid accidental deployment. All air bag system wiring is yellow. Do not use electrically powered test equipment on these circuits.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolts retaining the expansion valve and pipe
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core. Plug the heater core and heater hoses.
     
    Lower cover from the instrument panel
     
    Glove box
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the center console panel as follows:
    1. Remove lower panel and control wires.
    2.  
    3. Pull the control panel out and disconnect the connections.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the passenger side air bag module as follows:
    1. Disconnect the airbag connector from the support beam bracket and then unplug the connector.
    2.  
    3. Unfasten the 3 airbag module bolts and remove the module.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 screws and two nuts then remove the lower console panel
     
    Hooks that retain the defroster panel
     
    Nuts and remove the electrical connections as shown in the illustration
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument panel mounting bolts and remove the panel.

2005 Impreza And WRX
  1. Disarm the SRS system. Wait at least 20 seconds before starting any repair work.
    NOTE
    Air bag connectors are colored yellow. Do not use electrical equipment on these circuits. Be careful not to damage the airbag system harness when servicing.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the screws, remove the clip, disconnect the connectors and remove the instrument panel lower cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the console front panel cover. Remove the clip and remove the center console panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove box. Remove the screws and then remove the console side panel.
  10.  
  11. Detach the air bag connector from the support beam bracket. Disconnect the airbag connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three bolts and carefully remove the passenger-s side air bag module.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the four screws and two nuts and then remove the lower console panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hook and remove the defroster panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front pillar upper trim. Disconnect the two connectors and then loosen the nuts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolts.
  22.  
  23. Be sure that all the electrical harnesses are disconnected, and then remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Put alignment marks as necessary, in order to facilitate reassembly.

  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  26.  

2005 Legacy And Outback
  1. Disarm the SRS system. Wait at least 20 seconds before starting any repair work.
  2.  
  3. Be sure the tires are pointed in the straight ahead position.
    NOTE
    Air bag connectors are colored yellow. Do not use electrical equipment on these circuits. Be careful not to damage the airbag system harness when servicing.

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front pillar upper trim. Remove the console box. Remove the center console.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel lower cover. Remove the glove box.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination meter assembly. Remove the screws. Remove the driver-s side instrument panel side cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screws at the side of the center console. Remove the center air vent grille of the instrument panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screws at the side of the passenger-s side instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts securing the passenger-s side airbag module to the steering support beam.
  18.  
  19. Be sure that all the electrical harnesses are disconnected, and then remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Put alignment marks as necessary, in order to facilitate reassembly.

  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  22.  

Baja
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the SRS system. Wait at least 20 seconds before starting any repair work.
  4.  
  5. Be sure the tires are pointed in the straight ahead position.
    NOTE
    Air bag connectors are colored yellow. Do not use electrical equipment on these circuits. Be careful not to damage the airbag system harness when servicing.

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower instrument panel cover. Remove the lower steering column cover. Disconnect the harness connectors to the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts on the under side of the steering wheel pad. Disconnect the horn harness.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the air bag connector on the back of the airbag module. Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Put alignment marks on the steering wheel and steering shaft. Remove the steering wheel nut. Using a suitable puller, remove the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Matchmark the universal joint. Remove the universal joint bolt. Remove the universal joint.

  19. Remove all of the connectors on the steering column. Remove the steering column retaining bolts. Remove the steering column.
    NOTE
    Be sure to remove the universal joint before removing the steering column assembly. Do not loosen the tilt lever when the steering column is not secured to the vehicle.

  21. Remove the glovebox. Remove the side panel on both sides of the console.
  22.  
  23. Detach the air bag connector from the support beam bracket. Disconnect the airbag connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the three bolts and carefully remove the passenger-s side air bag module.
  26.  
  27. Remove the center console box. Remove the front pillar upper trim from both sides. Remove the front pillar lower trim from the passenger-s side of the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. If equipped with manual air conditioning, set the temperature control switch to FULL HOT. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the bottom of the heater unit. Do not move the switch and link on installation.
  30.  
  31. Remove the instrument panel retaining bolts. Disconnect the harness electrical connectors. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.

Impreza (Except WRX)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    If equipped with an air bag system, wait 10 minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable before performing any further work while the system fully de-energizes in order to avoid accidental deployment. All air bag system wiring is yellow. Do not use electrically powered test equipment on these circuits.

  3. Remove the rear console box.

  5. Pull the cup holder.
  6.

  31. Remove the 6 instrument panel retaining bolts and nuts.

  33. Remove the front defroster grille and 2 bolts.

  35. Carefully remove the instrument panel from the body and then disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the combination meter.

  37. Installation is the reverse order of assembly.
