Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake duct and cleaner case
     
    Air cleaner stay, if equipped
     
    Intercooler on turbo models
     
    Front Oxygen Sensor (O2S) connector
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector, if equipped
     
    Transmission ground cable, if necessary
     
    Clutch cable, if equipped
     
    Clutch release spring, if equipped
     
    Starter
     
    Operating cylinder from the transmission
     
    Pitching stopper
     

  4.  
  5. On turbo models, perform the following to disconnect the clutch release fork from the release bearing:
    1. Remove the clutch cylinder from the transmission.
    2.  
    3. Using a 10mm wrench, remove the plug.
    4.  
    5. Screw a 6mm diameter bolt into the release fork and remove it.
    6.  
    7. Raise the release fork and unfasten the release tabs to free the release fork.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt cover, if necessary
     
    Slave (operating) cylinder, on 2.5L engines
     

  8.  
  9. Install engine support assembly 927670000, on 3.0L engines, install support assembly 41099AA00.

    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     
    Rear O2S connector
     
    Front Y-pipe
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, on Legacy models
     
    Heat shield cover
     
    Hanger bracket from the right side of the transaxle
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Spring, and disconnect the shifter stay and rod from the transaxle
     
    Bolts securing the sway bar clamps to the crossmember
     
    Ball joints from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshafts from the transaxle
     
    Nuts securing the lower side of the transaxle to the engine
     

  10.  
  11. Support the transaxle with a jack.

    Rear transaxle crossmember
     
    Transaxle from the vehicle. Move the jack rearward until the mainshaft is withdrawn from the clutch cover.
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle assembly and secure it to the engine block
     
    Crossmember
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the crossmember retainers to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 40-62 ft. lbs. (54-84 Nm), on all engines except the 3.0L. On the 3.0L engine, tighten the T1 bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 87-115 ft. lbs. (117-157 Nm), on all engines except the 3.0L. On the 3.0L engine, tighten the T2 bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm)
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission jack.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Nuts securing the lower portion of the engine to the transaxle and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo and 3.0L models, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo and 3.0L models, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support.

    Drive belt cover
     
    Slave (operating) cylinder, on 2.5L engines
     

  10.  
  11. Install the pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 33-40 ft. lbs. (44-54 Nm) on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo and 3.0L models, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 35-49 ft. lbs. (47-67 Nm). on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo and 3.0L models, tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshafts into the transaxle with new roll pins
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolt to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm) on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo and 3.0L models, tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Sway bar to the crossmember and tighten the clamp bolts to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm) on all except turbo and 3.0L models. On turbo models, tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). On 3.0L models, tighten the clamp bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Shift control rod and stay to the transaxle and install the spring
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Heat shield cover, if removed
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, if removed
     
    Y-pipe with new gaskets and nuts
     
    Hanger bracket on the right side of the transaxle, if removed
     
    Rear O2S connector
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     
    Transaxle connectors bracket
     
    Drive belt cover
     
    Pitching stopper
     
    Starter
     
    Front O2S connector
     
    VSS connector, if equipped
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Clutch cable (if equipped)
     
    Clutch release spring
     
    Air cleaner case stay and case
     
    Air intake duct and attach the airflow sensor connector
     
    Negative battery cable

  5. Install engine support assembly 927670000.

    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine

    Rear O 2 S sensor connector
     
    Front Y-pipe
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, on Legacy models
     
    Heat shield cover
     
    Hanger bracket from the right side of the transaxle
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Spring, and disconnect the shifter stay and rod from the transaxle
     
    Bolts securing the sway bar clamps to the crossmember
     
    Ball joints from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshafts from the transaxle
     
    2 nuts securing the lower side of the transaxle to the engine
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transaxle with a jack.

    Rear transaxle crossmember
     
    Transaxle from the vehicle. Move the jack rearward until the mainshaft is withdrawn from the clutch cover.
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle assembly and secure it to the engine block
     
    Crossmember
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the crossmember retainers to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 40-62 ft. lbs. (54-84 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 87-115 ft. lbs. (117-157 Nm).
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission jack.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Nuts securing the lower portion of the engine to the transaxle and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support.

    Drive belt cover
     
    Slave (operating) cylinder, on 2.5L engines
     

  10.  
  11. Install the pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 33-40 ft. lbs. (44-54 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 35-49 ft. lbs. (47-67 Nm).
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshafts into the transaxle with new roll pins
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolt to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm)
     
    Sway bar to the crossmember and tighten the clamp bolts to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm)
     
    Shift control rod and stay to the transaxle and install the spring
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Heat shield cover, if removed
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, if removed
     
    Y-pipe with new gaskets and nuts
     
    Hanger bracket on the right side of the transaxle, if removed
     
    Rear O 2 S sensor connector
     
    Engine under cover, if removed
     
    Transaxle connectors bracket
     
    Drive belt cover
     
    Pitching stopper
     
    Starter
     
    Front O 2 S sensor connector
     
    VSS connector, if equipped
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Clutch cable (if equipped)
     
    Clutch release spring
     
    Air cleaner case stay and case

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake duct and cleaner case
     
    Air cleaner stay, if equipped

  2.  
  3. On turbocharged engine, perform the following to disconnect the clutch release fork from the release bearing:
    1. Remove the clutch cylinder from the transmission.
    2.  
    3. Using a 10mm wrench, remove the plug.
    4.  
    5. Screw a 6mm diameter bolt into the release fork and remove it.
    6.  
    7. Raise the release fork and unfasten the release tabs to free the release fork.
    8.  

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt cover, if necessary
     
    Slave (operating) cylinder, on 2.5L engine
     

  6.  
  7. Install engine support assembly 927670000, on 3.0L engine, install support assembly 41099AA00.

    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transmission to the engine
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     
    Rear O 2 S connector
     
    Front Y-pipe
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, on Legacy
     
    Heat shield cover
     
    Hanger bracket from the right side of the transmission
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Spring, and disconnect the shifter stay and rod from the transmission
     
    Bolts securing the sway bar clamps to the crossmember
     
    Ball joints from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshafts from the transmission
     
    Nuts securing the lower side of the transmission to the engine
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transmission with a jack.

    Rear transmission crossmember
     
    Transmission from the vehicle. Move the jack rearward until the mainshaft is withdrawn from the clutch cover.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission assembly and secure it to the engine block
     
    Crossmember
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the crossmember retainers to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 40-62 ft. lbs. (54-84 Nm), on all engines except the 3.0L. On the 3.0L engine, tighten the T1 bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 87-115 ft. lbs. (117-157 Nm), on all engines except the 3.0L. On the 3.0L engine, tighten the T2 bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm)
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission jack.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Nuts securing the lower portion of the engine to the transmission and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on all except turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine. On turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Bolt securing the right upper side of the transmission to the engine and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) on all except turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine. On turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support.

    Drive belt cover
     
    Slave (operating) cylinder, on 2.5L engine
     

  10.  
  11. Install the pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Step 1: T1 to 33-40 ft. lbs. (44-54 Nm) on all except turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine. On turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: T2 to 35-49 ft. lbs. (47-67 Nm). On all except turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine. On turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine, tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).

  13. Install or connect the following:

    Sway bar to the crossmember and tighten the clamp bolts to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm) on all except turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine. On turbocharged engine and 3.0L engine, tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). On 3.0L engine, tighten the clamp bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Shift control rod and stay to the transmission and install the spring
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Heat shield cover, if removed
     
    Rear exhaust pipe and muffler, if removed
     
    Y-pipe with new gaskets and nuts
     
    Hanger bracket on the right side of the transmission, if removed
     
    Rear O 2 S connector
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     
    Transmission connector bracket
     
    Drive belt cover
     
    Pitching stopper
     
    Starter
     
    Front O 2 S connector
     
    VSS connector, if equipped
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Clutch cable (if equipped)
     
    Clutch release spring

5-Speed



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake duct.
  4.  
  5. Unplug or disconnect the following cables and connectors:

    Front oxygen sensor connector
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Clutch cable
     
    Clutch release spring
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the starter, and pitching stopper.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drive belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Install engine support assembly 927670000 or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine.
  14.  
  15. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front Y-pipe.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the rear oxygen sensor wiring.
  20.  
  21. Remove the hanger bracket from the right side of the transaxle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spring and disconnect the shifter stay and rod from the transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the bolts securing the sway bar clamps to the crossmember.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  28.  
  29. Separate the halfshafts from the transaxle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the 2 nuts securing the lower side of the transaxle to the engine.
  32.  
  33. Support the transaxle with a jack.
  34.  
  35. Remove the rear transaxle crossmember.
  36.  
  37. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Secure the transaxle in place onto the transaxle jack.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transaxle assembly in place to the engine block and install it. Take care when mating the input shaft to the clutch assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the crossmember to the following specifications:
  6.  

Impreza:



T1-20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
 
T2-35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
 
T3-61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm)
 

Legacy:



T1-40-62 ft. lbs. (54-84 Nm)
 
T2-87-115 ft. lbs. (117-157 Nm)
 

  1. Remove the transmission jack.
  2.  
  3. Install the nuts securing the lower portion of the engine to the transaxle and tighten them to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:

    T1-40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    T2-49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Insert the halfshafts into the transaxle and install new roll pins.
  14.  
  15. Install the remaining components in the reverse of removal. Tighten all components to specifications.
  16.  
  17. Fill the transaxle to the proper level with the recommended oil.
  18.  
  19. Road test the vehicle.
  20.  

  1. Open the hood to the full open position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. On non turbocharged engine, remove the air intake duct and cleaner case. Remove the air cleaner case stay.
  8.  
  9. On turbocharged engine, remove the intercooler assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the neutral position switch connector and the back up light switch connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the VSS sensor electrical connector, on all vehicles except Legacy and Outback.
  14.  
  15. Remove the starter. Remove the clutch operating cylinder from the transmission.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pitching stopper. Position engine support tool ST41099AC000, or equivalent to hold the engine assembly in place.
  18.  
  19. On the 2005 turbocharged engine, except Legacy and Outback, separate the clutch release fork from the release bearing.
    NOTE
    Remove the plug using a 10mm wrench. Screw the 6mm diameter bolt into the release fork shaft, and then remove it. Raise the release fork and unfasten the release bearing tabs to release the fork. This is done to prevent interference with the engine when removing the transmission.

  20.  
  21. Remove the bolt which holds the upper side of the transmission to the engine.
  22.  
  23. On non turbocharged engine, remove the front and center exhaust pipes.
  24.  
  25. On turbocharged engine, remove the center exhaust pipe.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler. If equipped, remove the heat shield cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove the hanger bracket from the right side of the transmission, except on Legacy and Outback.
  30.  
  31. Remove the drive shaft.
  32.  
  33. Remove the gear shift rod and the stay from the transmission.
  34.  
  35. On all except Legacy and Outback, disconnect the stabilizer link from the transverse link. Remove the bolt securing the ball joint of the transverse link to housing.
  36.  
  37. On Legacy and Outback, disconnect the stabilizer link from the front arm. Remove the bolt securing the ball joint of the front arm to housing.
  38.  
  39. Remove the halfshafts from the transmission.
  40.  
  41. Remove the nuts that hold the lower side of the transmission to the engine.
  42.  
  43. Position a transmission jack under the transmission assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove the transmission rear crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the rear crossmember from the vehicle.
  46.  
  47. Carefully remove the transmission from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Move the transmission jack rearward until the main shaft is withdrawn from the clutch cover.

  48.  
  49. Separate the transmission assembly and rear cushion rubber.
  50.  
  51. On turbocharged engine, remove the release bearing from the engine side.
  52.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to fill the transmission with the proper grade and type transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  6.  
  7. Road test the vehicle.
  8.  

6-Speed



  1. Open the hood to the full open position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intercooler.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheels and tires.
  10.  
  11. Drain the transmission fluid.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine undercover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering gear universal joint retaining bolt.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the VSS connector located on the upper side of the transmission. Disconnect the ground cable located at the upper side of the transmission case and body.
  20.  
  21. Remove the starter.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clutch operating cylinder from the transmission. Do not disconnect the fluid lines. Position the assembly to the side.
  24.  
  25. Remove the clutch release shaft.
    NOTE
    Screw a 6mm diameter bolt into the release shaft, and then pull out the release shaft. Lift up the release fork and then remove it from the release bearing claw. Pull it to the engine side and set it free.

  26.  
  27. Remove the pitching stopper. Remove the pitching stopper bracket.
  28.  
  29. Position engine support tool ST41099AC000, or equivalent to hold the engine assembly in place.
  30.  
  31. Remove the center and rear exhaust pipes.
  32.  
  33. Remove the drive shaft.
  34.  
  35. Remove the front stabilizer bolt. Disconnect the ball joint of the transverse link from the housing.
  36.  
  37. On Legacy and Outback, disconnect the stabilizer link from the front arm. Remove the bolt securing the ball joint of the front arm to housing.
  38.  
  39. Using a pry bar, separate halfshafts from the transmission. Remove the front half shaft, then the front halfshaft.
  40.  
  41. Position a transmission jack under the transmission assembly.
  42.  
  43. Remove the transmission front and rear crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the front and rear cross members from the vehicle.
  44.  
  45. Move the transmission to the right side. Remove the joint COMPL bolt, stay bolt and reverse check cable.
    NOTE
    If the transmission is not moved, the joint COMPL and stay bolt will contact the body and damage may occur.

  46.  
  47. Remove the retaining bolts from the engine and transmission. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Rotate the engine support tool counterclockwise and lower the rear side of the engine to facilitate removal. Be careful not to contact the transmission with the body when pulling it backward.

  49. Remove the clutch pipe and breather pipe which may interfere with each other, as required.
  50.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to fill the transmission with the proper grade and type transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  6.  
  7. Road test the vehicle.
  8.  

Full Time 4wd



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake duct.
  4.  
  5. Unplug or disconnect the following cables and connectors:

    Front oxygen sensor connector
     
    Neutral position switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Clutch cable
     
    Clutch release spring
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the starter.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pitching stopper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt cover.
  12.  
  13. Install engine support assembly 927670000 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine.
  16.  
  17. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front Y-pipe.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the rear oxygen sensor connector.
  22.  
  23. Unbolt and extract the center exhaust pipe and the heat shield cover. Remove the hanger bracket from the right side of the transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the driveshaft.
  26.  
  27. Remove the spring and disconnect the shifter stay and rod from the transaxle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolts securing the sway bar clamps to the crossmember.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  32.  
  33. Separate the halfshafts from the transaxle.
  34.  
  35. Remove the 2 nuts securing the lower side of the transaxle to the engine.
  36.  
  37. Support the transaxle with a jack.
  38.  
  39. Remove the rear transaxle crossmember.
  40.  
  41. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle assembly and secure to the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the crossmember to the following specifications:
  4.  

Legacy:



T1-40-62 ft. lbs. (54-84 Nm)

  1. Remove the transmission jack.
  2.  
  3. Install the nuts securing the lower portion of the engine to the transaxle and tighten them to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the bolt securing the right upper side of the transaxle to the engine and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:

    T1-40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    T2-49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Insert the halfshafts into the transaxle and install new roll pins.
  14.  
  15. Install all the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
