Brake Drums

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Pry off the center cap, then remove the cotter pin, castle nut, and center retainer washer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drum.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the drum.
  2.  
  3. Install the center retainer washer and castle nut. Tighten the castle nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Install the center cap.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear wheels.

1997
  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the drum to the hub or hub studs for installation purposes.
  6.  
  7. Pry off the center cap, then remove the cotter pin, castle nut, and center retainer washer. Remove the center washer by inserting a screwdriver into the center slit and lightly tapping.
  8.  
  9. If the drum will not come off past the shoes, it will be necessary to retract the brake shoe adjusting screw. Remove the access hole cover from the backing plate and turn the adjuster to retract the linings away from the drum.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure the center retainer washer and castle nut and tighten to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.

Except WRX
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Center cap by prying it off
     
    Cotter pin, castle nut, and center retainer washer
     
    Drum
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Drum
     
    Center retainer washer and castle nut. Tighten the castle nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Center cap
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear wheels.

WRX
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, remove the adjusting hole cover from the backing plate and using a suitable tool, back off the shoe adjuster.
  8.  
  9. If the drum is difficult to remove, insert an 8mm bolt into the hole on the drum to push it off.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drum.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the drum.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear wheels.
  6.
