  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizers.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the sensor harness from the trailing link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt securing the trailing link to the housing.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the inner CV-joint from the differential.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the trailing link adjustment bolt to the crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Remove the outer lateral link on the housing side.
  16.  
  17. Secure the adjustment bolt and remove the nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the lateral links to the crossmember and remove the links.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the lateral link nuts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm). Tighten the outer lateral link bolt on the housing side new nut to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).

  23. Check the wheel alignment.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar from the rear lateral link.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the adjusting bolt to the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the lateral links to the crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Turn the lateral link cap counterclockwise until it contacts the stopper, then remove the cap.
  12.  
  13. Secure the lateral link adjusting bolt and loosen the self-locking nut.
  14.  
  15. If removing the right lateral links, remove the bolts securing the crossmember to the body.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjustment bolt and links.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure the crossmember-to-body the new nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm). Tighten the lateral links-to-housing long bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and short bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Check the rear wheel alignment.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear exhaust pipe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear sway bar link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS sensor bracket and parking brake cable bracket from the trailing link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the parking brake cable bracket from the floor.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the trailing link from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lateral link-to-knuckle through-bolt and nut.
  16.  
  17. Separate the inboard CV-joint from the differential carrier.
  18.  
  19. Matchmark the alignment bolt on the lateral link for installation purposes.
  20.  
  21. Remove the mounting bolt and remove the lateral link.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  24.  
  25. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Discard the old self-locking nuts and replace with new ones during installation.


    NOTE
    On all except 2.2L engine, do not remove the circlip attached to the inside of the differential. On 2.2L engine, the side spline circlip comes out together with the shaft. Be careful not to damage the side bearing retainer.



    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Stabilizers on turbocharged engine
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor harness from the trailing link, if equipped.
     
    Bolts that secure the lateral link to the rear housing.
     



    Bolts which secure the trailing link to the rear housing
     
    Halfshaft from the rear differential using a suitable tool.
     

  2.  
  3. Scribe an alignment mark on the rear lateral link adjusting bolt and crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Outer lateral link bolt securing the lateral link to the housing
     
    Bolts securing the front and rear lateral links to the crossmember
     
    Lateral links from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bolts securing the front and rear lateral links to the crossmember and hand-tighten
     
    Outer lateral link bolt securing the lateral link to the housing and hand-tighten
     
    Halfshaft to the rear differential
     
    Bolts that secure the lateral link to the rear housing
     
    Bolts which secure the trailing link to the rear housing
     
    ABS sensor harness to the trailing link, if equipped
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the lateral link bolts as shown in the illustration.
  4.  
  5. Check the wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  6.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor harness from the trailing arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the trailing link to the rear housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts which secure the lateral link assembly to the rear housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the DOJ from the rear differential, using tool ST28099PA100 or equivalent.
    NOTE
    The side spline snapring comes out together with the shaft. Be careful not to damage the side bearing retainer when using the special tool.

  16.  
  17. Scribe an alignment mark on the rear lateral link adjusting bolt and crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the front and rear lateral links to the crossmember, detach the lateral links.
    NOTE
    To loosen the adjusting bolt, always loosen the nut while holding the head of the adjusting bolt.

  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  

Rear Arm

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Wheel bearing assembly, refer to the procedure in this section
     
    Bolt holding the parking brake cable to the control arm
     
    Bolt securing the brake hose to the rear arm
     
    Bolt securing the Anti-lock Brake Sensor (ABS) sensor to the rear arm
     
    Brake line from the wheel cylinder with a flare nut wrench, if equipped with drum brakes. Plug the line to avoid contaminating the system. Suspend the brake backing plate from the sub-frame.
     
    Nut securing the stabilizer link to the rear arm
     
    Bolt holding the shock absorber to the rear arm
     

  2.  
  3. Use a suitable transmission jack to support the rear arm horizontally.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolt securing the rear arm to the body
     
    Nut securing the front link to the rear arm, loosen
     
    Nut securing the rear link to the rear arm, loosen
     
    Bolts holding the rear arm to the links
     
    Rear arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Use a transmission jack to support the rear arm.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Place a rag or cloth between the jack and its mating area to avoid scratching the rear link and sub-frame.



    Rear arm and temporarily tighten the bolts securing the rear arm to the link
     
    Wheel bearing unit
     
    Bolt securing the ABS sensor to the rear arm
     
    Brake hose-to-rear arm bolt
     
    Parking brake cable clamp-to-rear arm bolt
     

  4.  
  5. Place the tire changing jack (supplied with the car) upside down and position between the rear link and sub-frame. Adjust the jack position so the rear shock absorber is aligned with the rear arm at their corresponding holes. Install the lower shock absorber bolts.
  6.  
  7. Using the transmission jack, support the rear arm horizontally, then tighten the nuts and bolts holding the rear arm, front and rear links, upper link and shock absorber. Refer to the specifications in the illustration.
  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the alignment, if necessary.
  12.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sub frame support arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bearing unit.
  10.  
  11. Hang the backing plate from the sub frame.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt that secures the parking brake cable clamp to the rear arm bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt which holds the brake hose bracket and the ABS wheel speed sensor bracket to the rear arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts which secure the brake hose bracket to the rear arm. Remove the bolts which secure the ABS wheel speed sensor to the rear arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer link from the rear arm. Remove the shock absorber from the rear arm.
  20.  
  21. Support the rear arm assembly, horizontally using a transmission jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the nuts that retain the rear arm to the bracket. Remove the rear arm bracket.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the nut which holds the front link to the rear arm.
  26.  
  27. Loosen the nut which holds the rear link to the rear arm.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the nut which holds the upper link to the rear arm.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear arm from the vehicle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sub frame support arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bearing unit.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the parking brake cable clamp to the rear arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt securing the brake hose to the rear arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the ABS sensor to the rear arm.
  16.  
  17. Hang the backing plate from the sub frame.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut securing the stabilizer link from the rear arm. Remove the shock absorber retaining bolt from the rear arm.
  20.  
  21. Support the rear arm assembly, horizontally using a transmission jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolt securing the rear arm to the body.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the nut which holds the front link to the rear arm.
  26.  
  27. Loosen the nut which holds the rear link to the rear arm.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the nut which holds the upper link to the rear arm.
  30.  
  31. Remove the bolts securing the rear arm to the links. Remove the rear arm from the vehicle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS sensor bracket and parking brake cable bracket from the trailing link.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cap from the front trailing link bushing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front and rear through-bolts and nuts and remove the trailing link.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the trailing link and install the through-bolts and nuts. DO NOT tighten the nuts and bolts at this time. Install all remaining components at this time and tighten the front trailing link through-bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (157 Nm) and install the cap. Then tighten the rear trailing link through-bolt to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  2.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Rear parking bracket clamp and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor harness, if equipped
     
    Bolts that secure the trailing link to the bracket
     
    Bolt that secures the trailing link to the rear housing
     
    Trailing link from the vehicle
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Trailing link and the through-bolts and nuts. DO NOT tighten the nuts and bolts at this time.
     
    ABS sensor bracket, if equipped, and parking brake cable to the trailing link.
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the trailing link-to-bracket bolt to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm) and the nut to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the trailing link-to-rear housing to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  8.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove both the rear parking brake clamp and the ABS wheel speed sensor harness.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt which secures the trailing link to the trailing link bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt which secures the trailing link to the rear housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the trailing link from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
