Adjustment



The wheel bearings are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Unstake and remove the axle nut
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside
     
    Rotor
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Sway bar clamp
     
    Bolt securing the lateral link to the housing
     
    Bolts securing the trailing link to the housing
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Bolts securing the strut to the housing
     
    Speed sensor from the backing plate, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
     
    Housing assembly
     
    Hub from the rear housing using hub stand 92708000 and puller 927420000
     
    Backing plate from the housing
     
    Outer, inner and sub oil seals
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing by pressing the inner race
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
  2.  


NOTE
Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race and pack the bearing with grease
     
    Snapring and ensure that it fits properly
     
    New outer seal until it contacts the snapring using a press
     
    New inner seal until it contacts the bottom using a press
     
    New sub oil seal and apply grease to the oil seal lip
     
    Backing plate and tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     
    Hub into the housing using installer 927450000 to press it into position
     
    Housing to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm)
     
    Speed sensor, if equipped with ABS
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Trailing link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm)
     
    Lateral link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Sway bar clamp
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Rear brake assembly
     
    New axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Unstake and remove the axle nut
     
    Parking brake lever
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside
     
    Rotor
     
    Four bolts from the rear arm and the hub and bearing assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Disassemble the hub/bearing assembly as follows:
    1. Place the hub/bearing in a press.
    2.  
    3. Using dummy collar tool ST 398507703 to press the bearing from the hub.
    4.  
    5. Place the hub assembly on hub stand ST 927080000 and using a common puller and tool ST 399520105, remove the inner race of the bearing. Discard the bearing as it should not be reused.
    6.  
    7. Using the hub stand tool, press out the hub bolt.
    8.

To install:

  1. Install the bearing assembly to the hub as follows:
    1. Press a new hub bolt into place using the hub stand. Make sure the bolt closely contacts the hub. use a 0.47 inch (12mm) hole in the hub stand to prevent the bolt from tilting while installing.
    2.  
    3. Using the hub stand, hub installer ST 927450000 and spacer ST 28499AE000, press the NEW bearing assembly into the hub. Make sure to always press on the inner race while installing.
    4.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub assembly with the mounting holes on the backing plate and install the hub assembly and backing plate. Temporarily tighten the axle nuts. be careful not to damage the tone ring.
     
    Four bolts and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).

  5. Remove the axle nut, use axle shaft installer tool ST 922431000 and adapter 927390000 to pull the axle shaft into position and hand tighten the axle nut

    Caliper
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Parking brake lever
     
    Tighten the axle nut to 174 ft. lbs. (235 Nm) and stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Adjust the parking brake cable.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Trailing link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm)
     
    Lateral link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
     
    Sway bar clamp
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Rear brake assembly
     
    New axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  6.  

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap and remove the axle nut.
  8.  
  9. Return the parking brake lever and remove the console box lid.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the parking brake adjuster nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ABS sensor and clamp.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the parking brake cable clamp.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the brake hose from the strut.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the caliper assembly securing bolts.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the trailing link from the knuckle. Remove the nut securing the lateral link to the knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two nuts securing the strut to the knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the caliper assembly and fasten to the strut using wire.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rotor.
  30.  
  31. Remove the parking brake shoes and disconnect the cable from the shoe.
  32.  
  33. Remove the parking brake cable clamp and remove the cable from the back plate.
  34.  
  35. Separate the knuckle from the halfshaft.
  36.  
  37. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the knuckle. Extract the bearings.
  38.  
  39. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure all components as follows.

    Axle nut-123-152 ft. lbs. (167-206 Nm)
     
    Strut-to-knuckle-98-127 ft. lbs. (132-172 Nm)
     

  40.  

  1. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Unstake and remove the axle nut
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside
     
    Rotor
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Sway bar clamp
     
    Bolt securing the lateral link to the housing
     
    Bolts securing the trailing link to the housing
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Bolts securing the strut to the housing
     
    Speed sensor from the backing plate, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
     
    Housing assembly
     
    Hub from the rear housing using Hub Stand 92708000 and Puller 927420000
     
    Backing plate from the housing
     
    Outer, inner and sub oil seals
     
    Snapring
     
    Bearing by pressing the inner race
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
    NOTE

  5. Adjust the parking brake cable.

  1. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Unstake and remove the axle nut
     
    Parking brake lever
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside
     
    Rotor
     
    Four bolts from the rear arm and the hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Disassemble the hub/bearing assembly as follows:
    1. Place the hub/bearing in a press.
    2.  
    3. Using dummy collar tool ST 398507703 to press the bearing from the hub.
    4.  
    5. Place the hub assembly on hub stand ST 927080000 and using a common puller and tool ST 399520105, remove the inner race of the bearing. Discard the bearing as it should not be reused.
    6.  
    7. Using the hub stand tool, press out the hub bolt.

To install:

  1. Install the bearing assembly to the hub as follows:

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crimped section of the axle nut. Depress the parking brake and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  10.  
  11. Release the parking brake lever and loosen the locknut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper from its mounting. Wire it to the side; do not allow it to hang. Do not disconnect the brake fluid line.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rotor.
    NOTE
    If the rotor is seized within the hub, remove the rotor by installing an 8mm bolt in the screw hole on the rotor.

  16.  
  17. Disconnect the parking brake cable end.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the rear stabilizer from the rear lateral link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts that retain the trailing link assembly to the rear housing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts that retain the lateral assembly to the rear housing.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rear ABS wheel speed sensor from the backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Disengage the BJ from the housing splines, and remove the rear halfshaft assembly. If necessary, use tool ST92647000 and ST28099PA110.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal lip when removing the rear halfshaft. When the rear halfshaft is replaced also replace the inner oil seal.

  28.  
  29. Remove the bolts that secure the rear housing to the strut. Separate the two.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Always fully tighten the rubber bushings when the wheels are in full contact with the ground and the vehicle is at curb height.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the rear parking brake, as required.
  10.  

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crimped section of the axle nut. Depress the parking brake and remove the axle nut.
    NOTE
    Be sure to loosen the axle nut after removing the tire and wheel from the vehicle. Failure to do this may damage the wheel bearings.

  10.  
  11. Release the parking brake lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear ABS wheel speed sensor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake caliper from its mounting. Wire it to the side; do not allow it to hang. Do not disconnect the brake fluid line.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rotor. Matchmark the rotor and hub and bearing to aid in reassembly.
    NOTE
    If the rotor is seized within the hub, remove the rotor by installing an 8mm bolt in the screw hole on the rotor.

  18.  
  19. Remove the hub and bearing unit. If it is hard to remove, use tools ST926470000 and ST927140000.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the magnetic encoder for the ABS system.

  20.  

To install:

  1. Align the hub and bearing unit to the mounting hole of the backing plate. Install the assembly. Using a new axle nut temporarily tighten it.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the magnetic encoder for the ABS system.

  2.  
  3. Tighten the four backing plate bolts to 47.9 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle nut. Draw the rear halfshaft into position. Temporarily tighten the axle shaft nut. The nut should be olive in color.
  6.  
  7. Install the rotor. Install the caliper.
  8.  
  9. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor and brake cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the parking brake, as required.
  12.  
  13. While depressing the brake pedal, tighten the axle nut (olive color) to 177 ft. lbs. (240 Nm). Lock it securely in place.
    NOTE
    Install the tire and wheel after installation of the axle nut. Failure to do this may result in wheel bearing damage. Do not over tighten, as this too could cause wheel bearing damage.

  14.  
  15. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  16.  

All Wheel Drive
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Unstake and remove the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside, then remove the rotor. If equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the drum brake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the sway bar clamp.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the trailing link to the housing.
  20.  
  21. Remove the halfshaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts securing the strut to the housing.
  24.  
  25. If equipped with ABS, remove the speed sensor from the backing plate.
  26.  
  27. Remove the housing assembly.
  28.  
  29. Using hub stand 92708000 and puller 927420000 or equivalent, remove the hub from the rear housing.
  30.  
  31. Remove the backing plate from the housing.
  32.  
  33. Remove the outer, inner and sub oil seals.
  34.  
  35. Remove the snapring.
  36.  
  37. Remove the bearing by pressing the inner race.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Clean the housing thoroughly.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.

  2.  
  3. Install a new bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race.
  4.  
  5. Pack the bearing with grease.
  6.  
  7. Install the snapring and ensure it fits properly.
  8.  
  9. Using installer 927460000 or equivalent, press in a new outer seal until it comes in contact with the snapring.
  10.  
  11. Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in a new inner seal until it contacts the bottom.
  12.  
  13. Install a new sub oil seal.
  14.  
  15. Apply grease to the oil seal lip.
  16.  
  17. Install the backing plate and tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in the hub into the housing.
  20.  
  21. Connect the housing to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install and secure all remaining components in the reverse order of removal. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  24.  

Front Wheel Drive
  1. Disconnect t he negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Unstake and remove the axle nut.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected and suspend it aside. Remove the rotor. Or if equipped with rear drum, remove the drum brake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the spindle then the trailing link to the spindle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts securing the strut to the spindle and extract the spindle assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the spindle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Pack the oil seal located and the rear of the hub with grease.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub on the spindle and temporarily tighten a new nut and washer to hold the hub in place.
  4.  
  5. Connect the spindle to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the trailing link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the lateral link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install and secure the remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the parking brake cable.
  14.
