Relieving Fuel System Pressure

NOTE
This procedure must be performed prior to servicing any component of the fuel injection system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel pump connector from the fuel pump relay.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and let it stall.
  6.  
  7. Crank the engine for 5 seconds or more to ensure the fuel pressure is properly relieved. If the engine starts during this time, allow it to run until it stalls.
  8.  
  9. After performing the required service, connect the fuel pump harness.
  10.  


NOTE

  1. On Legacy, Outback and Baja Remove the fuel pump fuse from the main fuse box.
  2.  
  3. On Impreza and WRX disconnect the fuel pump connector from the fuel pump relay.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and run until it stalls.
  6.  
  7. Crank the engine for 5 seconds or more to ensure the fuel pressure is properly relieved. If the engine starts during this time, allow it to run until it stalls.
  8.  
  9. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove the key.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuel cap.
  14.
