  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator fan connector(s)
     
    Radiator outlet and heater hoses
     
    Heater bypass hose or overflow hose, if equipped
     
    Reservoir tank, on Legacy models
     
    Radiator fan motor assembly(ies)
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Timing belt
     
    Belt tension adjuster
     
    Belt idler No. 2
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
     
    Left side camshaft pulley(s)
     
    Left side rear timing belt cover
     
    Tensioner bracket
     
    Radiator and heater hoses from water pump
     
    Water pump retainer bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  8.  
  9. Inspect the radiator hoses for deterioration and replace as necessary.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump, tighten the bolts in sequence to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). After tightening the bolts once, retighten to the same specification again.
     
    Radiator heater hoses to water pump
     
    Tensioner bracket
     
    Left side rear timing belt cover
     
    Left side camshaft pulley(s)
     
    CMP sensor
     
    Belt idler No. 2
     
    Belt tension adjuster
     
    Timing belt
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator fan assembly(ies)
     
    Reservoir tank, if removed
     
    Heater bypass hose or overflow hose, if equipped
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Radiator outlet and heater hoses
     
    Radiator fan connector(s)
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the system with coolant and connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  8.  
  9. Check for leaks.
  10.  

1.8L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose and water bypass hose from the water pump.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the pulley nuts. Loosen the alternator assembly and remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  14.  
  15. Clean the gasket material from both mating surfaces. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  16.  
  17. Install the water pump and pump mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the alternator drive belt and drive belt cover. Adjust the drive belt to the proper tension. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-10 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Fill the radiator with coolant. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks.

2.5L And 3.3L Engines

  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the radiator fan motor assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt, tensioner and camshaft angle sensor. Refer to the procedure in this section for removal and installation steps.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left side camshaft pulley(s) and left side rear timing belt cover. Remove the tensioner bracket.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the radiator hose and heater hose from the water pump.
  20.  
  21. Remove the water pump retainer bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the water pump.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse of removal. Pay particular attenstion to the following information.
  26.  
  27. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  28.  
  29. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 7-10 ft. lbs. (10-14 Nm). After tightening the bolts once, retighten to the same specification again.
  30.  
  31. Fill the system with coolant and connect the negative battery cable.
  32.  
  33. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature and check for leaks.
  34.  

3.0L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Timing chain
     
    Water pump retainer bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  8.  
  9. Inspect the radiator hoses for deterioration and replace as necessary.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply coolant to the new O-ring before installation
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new O-ring, tighten the bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    Timing chain
     
    Front chain cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the system with coolant and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  10.  
  11. Check for leaks.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

  3. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Timing chain
     
    Water pump retainer bolts
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  
  7. Inspect the radiator hoses for deterioration and replace as necessary.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply coolant to the new O-ring before installation
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new O-ring, tighten the bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    Timing chain
     
    Front chain cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the system with coolant and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  10.  
  11. Check for leaks.
  12.  

Except 3.0L Engine

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     

  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Radiator fan connector(s)
     
    Radiator outlet and heater hoses
     
    Heater bypass hose or overflow hose, if equipped
     
    Reservoir tank, on Legacy
     
    Radiator fan motor assembly(ies)
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Timing belt
     
    Belt tension adjuster
     
    Belt idler No. 2
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
     
    Left side camshaft pulley(s)

  6.  
  7. Inspect the radiator hoses for deterioration and replace as necessary.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Always use new gaskets during installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    On 1998-2004 engines, tighten the pump bolts in sequence to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). After tightening the bolts once, retighten to the same specification again.
     
    On 2005 engines, tighten the pump bolts in sequence to 8.9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). After tightening the bolts once, retighten to the same specification again.

    Radiator heater hoses to water pump
     
    Tensioner bracket and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Left side rear timing belt cover
     
    Left side camshaft pulley(s). Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm) on non turbocharged engine and 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm) on turbocharged engine.
     
    CMP sensor
     
    Belt idler No. 2 and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Belt tension adjuster
     
    Timing belt
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator fan assembly(ies)
     
    Reservoir tank, if removed
     
    Heater bypass hose or overflow hose, if equipped
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Radiator outlet and heater hoses
     
    Radiator fan connector(s)
     
    Engine undercover, if removed
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the system with coolant and connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  8.  
  9. Check for leaks.
  10.
