Wiper Motor



Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wiper shaft cap nut and cushion.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear hatch interior trim cover.
  8.  
  9. At the wiper motor, disconnect the electrical harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper motor retainer bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiper motor.
  14.  
  15. Install the wiper motor inside the hatch assembly. Insert and tighten the retainer bolts to 39-62 inch lbs. (4-7 Nm).
  16.  
  17. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Check for proper wiper operation.
  20.  

1998-99 Legacy
  1. Remove the wiper head cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap and special nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear liftgate trim.
  8.  
  9. Undo the clips which secure the wiring harness, and disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the washer hoses.
  12.  
  13. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the motor mounting bolts to 4 ft. lbs. (6 Nm).

2000-05 Legacy & Outback
  1. Tilt up the wiper head cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap, nut and spacer from the rear wiper shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear liftgate trim.
  8.  
  9. Undo the clips which secure the wiring harness, and disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the motor mounting bolts to 4 ft. lbs. (6 Nm).

2002-03 Impreza
  1. Tilt up the wiper head cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap, nut and spacer from the rear wiper shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear liftgate trim.
  8.  
  9. Undo the clips which secure the wiring harness, and disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the motor mounting bolts to 4 ft. lbs. (6 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing the rear wiper cushion, ensure the arrow mark faces up.

2004-05 Impreza
  1. Tilt up the wiper head cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap, nut and spacer from the rear wiper shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear liftgate trim.
  8.  
  9. Undo the clips which secure the wiring harness, and disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the motor mounting bolts to 5.5 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing the rear wiper cushion, ensure the arrow mark faces up.

Baja
  1. Tilt up the wiper head cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and wiper arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap, nut and spacer from the rear wiper shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear liftgate trim.
  8.  
  9. Undo the clips which secure the wiring harness, and disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mounting screws and remove the motor assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Tighten the motor mounting bolts to 5.5 ft. lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing the rear wiper cushion, ensure the arrow mark faces up.
