Brake Light Switch

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the stop light switch.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the jam nut and unthread the switch from the mounting bracket.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Thread the stop light switch into the pedal bracket.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the switch so there is 0.071-0.130 in. (1.8-3.3mm) clearance.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the jam nut.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical harness.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Coupe, Sedan, XT, Wagon and Brat
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the stop light switch.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the jam nut on the switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stop light switch from the pedal bracket.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Thread the stop light switch into the pedal bracket.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the switch so the plunger travel is between 0.071-0.130 inch (1.8-3.3 mm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the jam nut.
  6.  
  7. Connect the stop light switch electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Verify proper stop light operation and adjust the switch as necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the stop light switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stop light switch locknut and remove the switch from the bracket.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the switch in the brake pedal bracket and adjust the switch using the two locknuts.
  2.  
  3. Adjust switch so 0.079 inch (2mm) of the plunger is exposed. Tighten the locknut after adjustment to 53-86 inch lbs. (6-10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical harness to the switch.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Verify proper stop light operation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the stop light switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower jam nut from the stop light switch.
  6.  
  7. Back off the upper jam nut and unscrew the switch from the brake pedal bracket.
  8.  

To install:
  1. With the upper jam nut on the switch, thread the switch into the brake pedal bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower jam nut on the switch.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the switch so there is 0.079-0.138 in. (2-3.5 mm) of clearance.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the upper and lower jam nuts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical harness.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Verify proper stop light operation.
