TESTING

Primary Coil Resistance

Make sure the vehicle ignition is OFF.

  1. Remove the ignition coil cover, if equipped.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the high tension wire from the coil.
  4.
  5. Use a multimeter or suitable circuit tester and check the primary resistance by connecting the meter ends to the positive and negative ends of the coil.
  6.
  7. If the resistance is not 0.84-1.02 ohms, replace the coil.
  8.
  9. When complete, install the high tension wire and ignition coil cover, if equipped.
  10.

Secondary Coil Resistance
  1. Remove the ignition coil cover, if equipped.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the high tension wire from the coil.
  4.
  5. Use a multimeter or suitable circuit tester and check the secondary resistance by connecting the meter ends to the negative end and the high voltage terminal of the coil.
  6.
  7. If the resistance is not 8.5-1.02 kilo-ohms, replace the coil.
  8.
  9. When complete, install the high tension wire and ignition coil cover, if equipped.
  10.

The ignition coil is located on the firewall.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the ignition coil cover, if equipped.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the high tension wire from the coil.
  6.
  7. Tag, then remove the lead wires attached to the coil.
  8.
  9. Remove the coil by either loosening the nut and bolt on the coil bracket, and sliding the coil out, or removing the retaining screws securing the coil and bracket to the firewall.
  10.

To install:
  1. If the coil and bracket were removed together, then align the holes in the bracket with the holes in the firewall, and secure the coil in place with the retaining screws. If the coil was removed with the bracket in place on the firewall, then slide the coil into the bracket and secure by tightening the nut and bolt on the bracket.
  2.
  3. Attach the lead wires to the coil.
  4.
  5. Fasten the high tension wire to the coil.
  6.
  7. Install the coil cover, if equipped.
  8.
