    1. Disconnect the front bumper combination lamp wiring.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bumper attaching bolt in the wheel column. Then, move the bumper forward to disengage the clip connection at the side.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bumper.
    6.  
    7. Reverse the removal process to install the bumper. Tighten the bumper strut-to-body retaining bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm), if removed. Tighten all bolts that retain plastic components to 4-6 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).

    1. Remove the screws that connect the bumper side and rear quarter.
    2.  
    3. Open the rear gate and remove the bumper top connecting screws.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bumper bottom connecting screws.
    6.  
    7. Move the bumper slightly downward and remove it from the car.
    8.  
    9. Reverse the removal process to install the bumper. Tighten the bumper strut-to-body retaining bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm), if removed. Tighten all bolts that retain plastic components to 4-6 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).

    1985-89 Models Except XT; 1990-96 Loyale
    FRONT

    WARNING
    When removing the front bumper on air bag equipped models, use care to avoid damaging the air bag system wirings and components, which are routed near the front bumper. All air bag wiring is wrapped in yellow.


    CAUTION
    Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. The procedure can be found in ( Chassis Electrical ). under the heading "Supplemental Restraint System".

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. If not using a lift, remove the battery and canister.
    4.  
    5. If a lift is being used, remove the left and right undercovers.
    6.  
    7. Remove the left and right hold-down bands from the main harness and move the harness away from the bumper.
    8.  
    9. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove the clips that secure the automatic transaxle lines, and move the lines away from the front bumper.
    10.  
    11. On models with air conditioning, move the left transaxle line away from the bumper.
    12.  
    13. Insert rags between the front bumper and the car body to ensure sufficient clearance to insert a service tool to remove the bumper mounting bolts.
    14.  
    15. Disconnect the harness connectors from the left and right front turn signal lamps.
    16.  
    17. Place a container under the headlight washer unit to catch the fluid, and disconnect the headlight washer hoses.
    18.  
    19. Remove the bolts that secure the front bumper. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper.
    20.  

    To Install:
    1. Install the front bumper in position and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Clearance between the bumper and upper skirt should be 0.25 in. (6mm) when viewed from the front of the car.
    4.  
    5. Reconnect the lighting assemblies and reposition all hoses.
    6.  
    7. Install the left and right undercovers.
    8.  
    9. Install the canister and the battery.
    10.  

    REAR-4-DOOR SEDAN AND 2-DOOR HATCHBACK

    1. Open the trunk lid. Remove the trunk trim panel clips and detach the trim.
    2.  
    3. Remove both the side and center trunk covers.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the rear light harness connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 flange nuts.
    8.  
    9. Extract the rear bumper half way. Remove the grommet from the license plate harness, and remove the connector through the hole in the skirt section.
    10.  
    11. Remove the rear bumper horizontally.
    12.  
    13. Install the bumper in position and install all trim pieces removed.
    14.  
    15. Tighten the flange nuts to 22-31 ft. lbs. (29-42 Nm).

    REAR-WAGON

    1. Remove the 2 bolts that secure each lower end of the bumper to the body.
    2.  
    3. Remove the plug from the wall on each side of the center sub-trunk and remove the rear bumper retaining bolts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Install the bumper assembly in position and tighten the retaining bolts to 52-73 ft. lbs. (66-100 Nm).

    XT Coupe
    FRONT

    1. Position the vehicle on a lift.
    2.  
    3. Set the head lights to upper beam.
    4.  
    5. Remove the battery.
    6.  
    7. Raise the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the mud guards (inner plastic fender shields).
    10.  
    11. Remove the under cover and air dam skirts.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bolts that secure the lower ducts.
    14.  
    15. Remove the bolts that secure the side bumpers.
    16.  
    17. Remove the bolts that secure the lower side of the side ducts.
    18.  
    19. Remove the bolts from the back of the bumper stay.
    20.  
    21. Lower the vehicle.
    22.  
    23. Remove the washer tank:
      1. Disconnect the hose from the check valve on the back of the front bumper.
      2.  
      3. Remove the bolts and washers that hold the air cleaner.
      4.  
      5. Remove the clamp from the boot assembly.
      6.  
      7. Remove the air cleaner, then remove the conical nuts which hold the washer tank.
      8.

    Be sure to turn the steering wheel completely to the left before removing the washer tank.

    1. Remove the bolts that secure the upper side of the side duct, and remove the side duct.
    2.  
    3. With the help of an assistant, slide the bumper slightly forward being careful not to damage the wiring harness.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the front combination light harness connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the front bumper.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. With the help of an assistant, position the bumper onto the vehicle and tighten the retaining bolts.
    2.  
    3. Connect the front combination light harness connector.
    4.  
    5. Install the upper side ducts and retaining bolts.
    6.  
    7. Install the washer tank, the clamp for the boot assembly, the check valve hose on the back of the bumper and the air cleaner.
    8.  
    9. Raise the vehicle.
    10.  
    11. Install the bolts on the back of the bumper stay and tighten securely.
    12.  
    13. Install the lower side ducts.
    14.  
    15. Install the air dam skirts and under cover.
    16.  
    17. Install the mud guards.
    18.  
    19. Lower the vehicle.
    20.  
    21. Install the battery.
    22.  

    REAR

    1. Open the trunk lid.
    2.  
    3. Remove the trunk lid trim.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the license light harness connector, remove the grommet from the body and transfer the connector outside the trunk.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolts that secure the sides of the rear bumper.
    8.  
    9. Remove the nuts that secure the bumper stays.
    10.  
    11. Remove the bumper.
    12.  
    13. Reverse the above process to install the bumper.
    14.  
    15. Adjust the clearance between the bumper and the rear combination light and between the bumper and the tail light to 0.31 in. (8mm).

    Impreza
    FRONT

    WARNING

    Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. The procedure can be found in ( Chassis Electrical ) under the heading "Supplemental Restraint System".

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the vapor canister.
    4.  
    5. Remove the front grille.
    6.  
    7. Remove the left side parking light and headlight.
    8.  
    9. Remove the mud guard.
    10.  
    11. Remove the bolts from the side of the bumper.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bolt from the lower center of the bumper.
    14.  
    15. Remove the bolts from the lower side of the bumper.
    16.  
    17. Remove the bolts from the bumper stays on the engine compartment side.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the turn signal light connector.
    20.  
    21. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    22.  

    To install:
    1. To facilitate installation, position the front bumper and attach the hook (located at the stay) to the body panel. Install the bolts from to the bumper stays on the engine compartment side.
    2.  
    3. Install the bolts to the lower side of the bumper.
    4.  
    5. Install the bolt to the lower center of the bumper.
    6.  
    7. Install the bolts to the side of the bumper.
    8.  
    9. Install the mud guard.
    10.  
    11. Install the left side parking light and headlight.
    12.  
    13. Connect the turn signal light connector.
    14.  
    15. Install the front grille.
    16.  
    17. Tighten all bolts securely.
    18.  
    19. Install the vapor canister and connect the negative battery cable.
    20.  

    REAR-SEDAN

    1. Open the trunk lid and remove the rear trim panel and clips.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the license plate light connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolts and nuts from the side of the bumper.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bumper stay retaining bolts.
    8.  
    9. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    10.  

    To install:
    1. Install the bumper into position and install the stay retaining bolts.
    2.  
    3. Install the side bumper retaining bolts.
    4.  
    5. Connect the license plate light connector.
    6.  
    7. Install the rear trim panel and retaining clips.
    8.  

    REAR-WAGON

    1. Open the tailgate and rear quarter trim lid.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the license plate light connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolts and nuts from the side of the bumper.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bumper stay retaining bolts.
    8.  
    9. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    10.  

    To install:
    1. To facilitate installation, position the rear bumper and attach the hook (located at the stay) to the body panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the bumper into position and install the stay retaining bolts.
    4.  
    5. Install the side bumper retaining bolts.
    6.  
    7. Connect the license plate light connector.

    Legacy
    FRONT

    1. Properly disarm the air bag system, on models equipped. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the vapor canister.
    4.  
    5. Remove the inner fender shield.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolts and nuts that retain the bumper at the side.
    8.  
    9. Remove the lower part of the bumper by releasing the clips.
    10.  
    11. From the engine compartment, remove the bumper stay retaining bolts.
    12.  
    13. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    14.  

    To install:
    1. Install the bumper into position and tighten the stay bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm).
    2.  
    3. install the lower part of the bumper by pushing it firmly into place and engaging the clips.
    4.  
    5. Install the side bumper retaining nuts and bolts. Install the inner fender shield.
    6.  
    7. Install the vapor canister and connect the negative battery cable.
    8.  

    REAR

    1. Open the trunk lid or tailgate and remove the rear trim panel and clips.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolts and nuts from the side of the bumper.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bumper stay retaining bolts.
    6.  
    7. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Install the bumper into position and install the stay retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Install the side bumper retaining bolts. Install the rear trim panel.
    12.  

    SVX
    FRONT

    1. Properly disarm the air bag system and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the engine under cover.
    4.  
    5. Detach the front side of the inner fender guards and remove the side bumper bolts.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bumper side stay from the bumper.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts securing the lower side of the bumper to the body.
    10.  
    11. Remove the front combination lamp assemblies and remove the bumper retaining bolt from behind the assemblies.
    12.  
    13. Remove the vapor canister from its bracket.
    14.  
    15. In the engine compartment, remove the bumper stay retaining bolts. With the help of an assistant, remove the bumper assembly from the vehicle.
    16.  

    To install:
    1. Install the bumper into position and install the bumper stay retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the vapor canister into position. Install the side bumper retaining bolts and the combination lamp assemblies.
    4.  
    5. Install the bumper side stays and the inner fender guard bolts.
    6.  
    7. Install the lower bumper-to-body bolts.
    8.  
    9. Install the engine undercover and lower the vehicle.
    10.  

    REAR

    1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the lower rear fender shield bolts and pull the fender shields out slightly. Remove the bumper retaining bolts from behind the fender shield.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lower bumper retaining bracket bolts and the brackets.
    6.  
    7. Remove the rear trunk trim panel and then remove the trunk side panels.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rear wiper washer tank and remove the side bumper retaining nut.
    10.  
    11. Remove the plastic cap from the floor (one on each side) and remove the bumper stay bolts.
    12.  
    13. With the help of an assistant, slightly lift the bumper assembly to disengage it from the mounting hooks, and remove it from the vehicle.
    14.  
    15. Install the bumper in position and install the stay bolts. Tighten the stay bolts to 51-87 ft. lbs. (69-118 Nm).
    16.  
    17. Install the remaining bumper bolts and install all removed trim panels.
    18.  
    19. Install the lower fender shield retaining bolts and lower the vehicle.
    20.
