Instrument Cluster

CAUTION
Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Justy
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retainer clips and choke knob and nut, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster trim cover retainer screws and clips.
  6.  
  7. Remove the trim cover, and place aside.
  8.  
  9. Remove the defroster duct assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the heater control cable from the air selector rod at the heater unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster retaining screws, and carefully pull the cluster assembly forward enough to access the rear of the assembly.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the rear of the instrument cluster. Disconnect the electrical harnesses from the cluster assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument cluster from the mounting tabs.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Connect the speedometer cable and electrical harnesses to the rear of the instrument cluster.
  2.  
  3. Position the instrument cluster in the mounting tabs.
  4.  
  5. Install the instrument cluster and tighten the retaining screws securely.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater control cable and the defroster duct assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the trim panel using the retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. Attach the trim panel retainer clips. Install the choke nut and knob, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Test all instrument functions, including the gauges and dash light to make them work correctly.
  16.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column retainer bolts, and lower the column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retainer screws securing the instrument cluster visor in place. Lift the visor forward and unfasten the harnesses attached to the switches in the panel. Place the panel aside.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument cluster retainer screws. Pull the cluster assembly out enough to access the wire harnesses and speedometer cable at the rear of the assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the speedometer cable and wire harnesses from the rear of the cluster.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Attach the wire harnesses and speedometer cable to the rear of the cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Position the cluster in the dash panel, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  4.  
  5. Attach the harnesses to the visor mounted switches, then install the instrument cluster visor. Secure the visor in place using the retainer screws.
  6.  
  7. Raise the steering column up, and secure in place with the retainer bolts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Test all instrument functions, including the gauges and dash light to make them work correctly.
  12.  

XT

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower trim panel on the driver's side. Remove the side ventilation duct.
  4.  
  5. Open the fuse box lid. Remove the fuse box-to-instrument panel screws, then remove the fuse box.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable prytool.carefully separate the upper cover, at 3 points, from the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column assembly, combination meter and the control wing as a unit. Refer to Suspension & Steering for steering column removal and installation.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical harnesses from the steering column assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster to steering column screws, and separate the cluster from the column.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the instrument cluster to the steering column, and secure in place using the retainer screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical harnesses from the cluster assembly and steering column to the dash panel harnesses.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower and upper instrument panel covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the fuse box, the side ventilation duct and the lower instrument panel covers. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Test all instrument functions, including the gauges and dash light to make them work correctly.
  12.  

Legacy and Impreza

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Properly disarm the air bag.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts securing the steering column and lower it down.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center ventilator control lever by pulling it. Remove the 3 screws accessible through the ventilator grille to the right of the cluster and the 1 screw accessible through the grille on the left. Remove the vent.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dash panel retainer screws around the instrument cluster.
  8.  
  9. Carefully pull the trim panel forward and disconnect the electrical harnesses attached to the switches in the trim panel. Remove the trim panel and place aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster retaining screws, then pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable and electrical harnesses from behind, then remove the cluster assembly from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the electrical harnesses and the speedometer cable to the rear of the cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster assembly, and tighten the attaching screws securely.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster visor and the visor screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the ventilator vent, control lever and retainer screws.
  8.  
  9. Lift the steering column up, instal and tighten the retainer bolts.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Test all instrument functions, including the gauges and dash light to make them work correctly.
  14.  

SVX

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Properly disarm the air bag.
  2.  
  3. Move the steering wheel to its lowest tilt position. Remove the lower steering column cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower cluster cover and the screws that retain the cluster visor around the instrument cluster.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the clock while pulling the visor away from the cluster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws that retain the cluster and tilt the cluster forward. Disconnect the electrical harnesses and speedometer cable.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the electrical leads and speedometer cable to the rear of the instrument cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster in position in the dash panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster visor, making sure to connect the clock harness. Secure in place with the retainer screws
  8.  
  9. Install the lower cluster cover panel and the lower steering column cover.
  10.  
  11. Raise the steering column up to the original position.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Test all instrument functions, including the gauges and dash light to make them work correctly.
