  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the trim cover over the upper strut mount.
  8.  
  9. Support the control arm with a suitable jack, and remove the long bolt that connects the knuckle to the outboard control arm.
  10.  
  11. Slowly lower the control arm to remove the coil spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner control arm to frame nut and bolts, then remove the lower control arm.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the control arm in the vehicle, and install the inner mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (69Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the coil spring in position and raise the control arm until the outer control arm-to-knuckle bolt can be installed.
  4.  
  5. Install the long bolt and nut and tighten to 61 ft. lbs. (84 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the trim cover over the upper strut plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the jack.
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
  18.  

Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, XT, Wagon and Brat

OUTER CONTROL ARM
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Support the control arm assembly with a suitable jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three bolts securing the inner and outer control arms together.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut and bolt securing the outer control arm to the suspension assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the outer control arm.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the outer control arm, and install the bolt and nut securing the outer control arm to the suspension member. Tighten the bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (131 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the 3 outer control arm-to-inner control arm bolts, and tighten to 101 ft. lbs. (131 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm support.
  6.  
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the rear alignment.
  12.  

INNER CONTROL ARM
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Support the control arm assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three bolts securing the inner and outer control arms together.
  8.  
  9. On 4WD vehicles perform the following steps.
    1. Remove the spring pin securing the halfshaft to the carrier assembly.
    2.  
    3. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the rear halfshaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the muffler and tail pipe assembly, if the right side is being serviced.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the halfshaft from the differential carrier.
    8.  
    9. Using a suitable halfshaft removal tool, unseat the halfshaft from the hub and remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
    10.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber assembly.
  12.  
  13. Cap and disconnect the brake hose at the rear suspension member.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inner control arm-to-frame mounting nut and bolt, and remove the control assembly.
  16.  
  17. With the assembly removed from the vehicle remove all necessary brake components.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the inner control arm in the vehicle and install the inner control arm mounting nut and bolt. Tighten the mounting bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the previously removed brake components.
  4.  
  5. Connect the brake hose at the rear suspension member.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. On 4WD vehicles perform the following steps:
    1. Insert the halfshaft into the hub.
    2.  
    3. Connect the halfshaft to the differential carrier.
    4.  
    5. Install the muffler and tail pipe assembly if removed.
    6.  
    7. Install the castle nut and cotter pin on the rear halfshaft.
    8.  
    9. Install the spring pin securing the halfshaft to the carrier assembly.
    10.  

  10.  
  11. Install the three bolts securing the outer control arm to the inner control arm and tighten the bolts to 101 ft. lbs. (131 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Remove the control arm support.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brake system.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check and adjust the rear alignment.
  22.  

Legacy and Impreza
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar from the rear lateral link.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the adjusting bolt to the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the lateral links to the crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Turn the lateral link cap counterclockwise until it contacts the stopper, then remove the cap.
  12.  
  13. Secure the lateral link adjusting bolt and loosen the self-locking nut.
  14.  
  15. If removing the right lateral links, remove the bolts securing the crossmember to the body.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjustment bolt and links.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the lateral links, and insert the adjustment bolts.
  2.  
  3. If installing the right lateral links, install and tighten the crossmember-to-body bolts.
  4.  
  5. Secure the adjustment bolts and tighten the new nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lateral link cap.
  8.  
  9. Install the bolts and new nuts securing the lateral links to the housing. Tighten the long bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and short bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar to the rear lateral link.
  12.  
  13. Install the exhaust and muffler assembly with new nuts and gaskets.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel.
  16.  
  17. Check the rear wheel alignment.
  18.  

ALL WHEEL DRIVE

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizers.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the sensor harness from the trailing link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt securing the trailing link to the housing.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the inner CV-joint from the differential.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the trailing link adjustment bolt to the crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Remove the outer lateral link on the housing side.
  16.  
  17. Secure the adjustment bolt and remove the nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the lateral links to the crossmember and remove the links.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the lateral links and insert the bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install new nuts to the lateral link nuts and tighten them to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the outer lateral link bolt on the housing side and tighten the new nut to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the CV-joint to the differential and insert a new roll pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the bolt securing the trailing link to the housing.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, connect the ABS harness to the trailing link.
  12.  
  13. Install the stabilizers.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel.
  16.  
  17. Check the wheel alignment.
  18.

TRAILING LINK

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS sensor bracket and parking brake cable bracket from the trailing link.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cap from the front trailing link bushing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front and rear through-bolts and nuts and remove the trailing link.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the trailing link and install the through-bolts and nuts. DO NOT tighten the nuts and bolts at this time.
  2.  
  3. Connect the ABS sensor bracket and parking brake cable to the trailing link.
  4.  
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the front trailing link through-bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (157 Nm) and install the cap.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the rear trailing link through-bolt to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  12.  

LATERAL LINK

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear exhaust pipe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear sway bar link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS sensor bracket and parking brake cable bracket from the trailing link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the parking brake cable bracket from the floor.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the trailing link from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lateral link-to-knuckle through-bolt and nut.
  16.  
  17. Separate the inboard CV joint from the differential carrier.
  18.  
  19. Matchmark the alignment bolt on the lateral link for installation purposes.
  20.  
  21. Remove the mounting bolt and remove the lateral link.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the lateral link and install the adjusting bolt finger tight.
  2.  
  3. Connect the inboard CV joint to the differential carrier.
  4.  
  5. Position the lateral links at the knuckle and install the through-bolt finger-tight.
  6.  
  7. Connect the trailing link to the knuckle and tighten the bolt to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the parking brake cable bracket to the floor.
  10.  
  11. Connect the parking brake cable and ABS sensor brackets to the trailing link.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear sway bar link.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear exhaust pipe.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the inner lateral link mounting bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the outer lateral link mounting bolts to 86 ft. lbs. (128 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
  26.
